Fixed Phrases

Fixed phrases are phrases in which the wording cannot be changed without sounding odd to
native speakers, even if the literal meaning is the same.

Fixed phrases help to make your speech and writing more fluent.

1) Match the sentence halves. The expressions in bold form fixed phrases with the pattern
noun + of + noun.
1. The film’s release caused a surge

5. Whether it’s right or wrong is a matter

2) Read the statements 1-7, and answer the questions a-g below, which all include idioms
with noun + of + noun.

4. I really wish I hadn’t insulted him – it’s just that I was so angry.
