CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM
Introduction

Flood is one of the problems that we, the people face in an unexpected

period of time. This sudden event damages not just our places but also our

emotional status. It leaves a traumatic memory to the people who experienced it.

Even in the University of Science and Technology of the Southern Philippines,

people also experience flooding. Lately, last January 9, 2017 we had

experienced a very traumatic urban flood, the water was so high it even passes a

human height and a vehicle. Can we ask ourselves, what were the causes of this

flood?

There were some aspects that cause this flood. The main reason that the

University of Science of Technology of the Southern Philippines always

experiences flooding is because it is located in a low-line-area of the City. Also,

one reason of the occurrence of this flood is the clogged drainage caused by

garbage thrown by people all over the City. Some people are lack of discipline

with their garbage. So the main point here is that we, the citizens of our City are

the ones to be blamed for these floods. And now, all our doings back fired on us.

We are the one who suffer from this calamity. That’s why we experience flooding

in our places.

No one can fight flood because when rainfall is there, flood follows. The

said university is where the researchers are currently enrolled in. Students could

even sacrifice their academics and safety to such situations that may happen in
the university. It is said to be that an institution needs to be safe but how come it

can be safe if it experience flooding.

Conceptual Framework of the Study

The input of the study consisted two group of respondents, namely: 100

students and 5 teachers. It also included the evaluation and suggestions of

students and professors through their satisfaction of organizations. Respondents

enrolled in years 2016-2017 are included in the frame.

The thoughput consisted of the obtained output of the checklists and

questionnaires distributed by researchers. The senior high school , 2 nd year, 3rd

year, 4th year, and 5th year selected students are also included as respondents of

the study implemented.

Statement of the Problem

This project study is established to evaluate the effects of such floods and the

rate of awareness of students and people on how to deal with the unexpected

phenomenon.
Specifically, if attempted to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the students according to;

will gain insights about the awareness of the people for them to be able to help

the implementation of future programs that gain possible changes for the benefit

of the school and the administration. The professors will be provided programs,

activities and trainings

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study is descriptive in nature and focused on the training awareness and

proper drills of the student in the University of Science and Technology of

Southern Philippines (USTP) as identified by the PAG-ASA. The research

example is composed of (20) 1 st year college in USTP. The primary data

gathering method used was survey to determine the student’s perspective of the

lack of awareness based on their experience on the last calamity they suffered in

Cagayan de Oro City.

One set of questionnaire – checklist were utilized in gathering the data. The

contents, however of this checklist is very answerable.

careful and thoughtful way.

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter contains the foreign and local literature, and the foreign and local

studies. The following discussion will state the related studies that are

researched by foreign and local researchers. The researchers studied about

awareness and preparedness for some citizens encountering natural calamities

that happen in their vicinity.

Foreign Setting

Preparedness for calamities is critical for busy college students but many

remain unprepared. As recent disaster serve highlight the need for individual

responsibility, local coordination, and continuity plans to ensure the ability to

respond to and recover from events, and preparation as a goal without

developing a system to achieve and maintain it. Donahue said that one of

government’s and school’s primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and

security of its citizen. This is a tall order, since we live in an environment fraught

with complex hazards, as illustrated by the present economic crisis and the major

natural disasters, or calamities. As a society, we ready ourselves to avoid and

withstand the harms that may be fall us by preparing for them in various way.

Local Setting
The Philippines is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to climate

change. Climate change has also increased the frequency and severity of natural

disasters. Studies in climate change simulations show the rainfall will increase in

intensity during the wet season in Central Visayas and Southern Tagalog

provinces. The country is also expected to experience longer dry seasons

exacerbated by El Niño Southern Oscillation in Mindanao. For the last years, the

Philippines was in the top in three countries for the number of natural disasters,

with the most frequent floods. Floods commonly occur as secondary hazards

induced by typhoons. The Philippines has mountainous terrain with a sharp drop

to coastal areas, exposing communities on low-lying areas to high risk, according

to Styles. The key to promoting efficient disaster risk-reduction measures is to

over communicate and over prepare. The only way to really be able to help

preserve lives and ensure businesses would not cease to exist is to overdo

preparations, and it all starts by helping raise toward a culture of preparedness

and resilience according to Maclang.

CHAPTER 3

Research Methodology
In this chapter, the following discusses about the research method and

instruments used in the study, the respondents, the setting and data gathering

procedure of the study. Methods of Research to be used

Research Method

The descriptive method of research was used through questionnaire-

checklists as the main instrument for the study. This method of research was

done to determine how well the university was prepared for a prospective

calamity based on the views of such respondents. The data were computed by

means of an agree-disagree questionnaire with the means of a checklist and

commentary question.

Data Gathering Instruments

The questionnaire-checklist is the main instrument used in gathering the

pertinent data. There were two sets of questionnaire checklists used, one for

each group of respondents. The use of this questionnaire with a semi-structure is

to carry out the in-depth interviews. It is designed in a logical order and organized

it in a way to be able to answer the research sub-question.

Respondents

The respondents of this study were 10 second-year, 10 third-years, 10

fourth-year, and 10 fifth year students taking up a variety of courses. Also, there

are 5 professors teaching a variety of subjects of the University of Science and

Technology in Cagayan de Oro City. The researchers sought information from

those students who were enrolled at school years 2016-2017 and who were

present during the calamity outbreaks of the said university.

Setting of the Study

The questionnaire checklist were checked and evaluated by the

researches adviser and parents with the uses of their own criticism and

suggestions. After evaluation and suggestion formulation, it underwent a dry-run.

It was then finalized and submitted for review. The suggestion then formulated

and finalized for content were of the questionnaire for reproduction and

distribution to all respondents. After the accomplished and answered

questionnaire checklists were retrieved from the students and professors, the

researchers compiled, tabulated, and formulated all the data. The total

formulations of all answers determine the true purpose of this study for the

benefit of the said university. The tallied answers were distinguished by counting

the total agrees and disagrees and also by the suggestions and comments for

the respondents.

Data-Gathering Procedure

Since the survey will happen at the school’s campus, it is directly

permitted for us to conduct the said surveying. Immediately after the reproduction

and permission to administer the survey granted by the adviser and the school,

arrangement were made by the researchers for further analysis of the study
using the surveying method to the students and professors whom were involved

in the study.
