c) Standards
● CCSS Math 3.OA.7
Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship
between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40
÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory
all products of two one-digit numbers.
● NJCCCS Science 5.4.4.A.2
Identify patterns of the Moon’s appearance and make predictions about its future
appearance based observational data.
d) Justification: Students will have learned about the phases of the moon. This will
provide insight into student understanding and ability. Students are also currently
working through facts in multiplication.
3. Assessment
c) Post-Assessment: At the end of the game, students need to name all the phases of
the moon in order to “win.”
4. Learning Experience
a) Lesson will begin with a game of “I have...who has…” Students will receive a
picture card of the phases. One student will start, “I have this phases who has the
next.” After completing this game to review the phases of the moon and their order,
the students will gets a gameboard and a blank sheet of scrap paper. This will be a
sheet of the moon phases numbered 1-8 and have a line for writing the name in.
Bottom of worksheet will include word bank. Each group will receive a stack of digit
cards that will be shuffled.
Student with lowest number in the group will go first (students have class assigned
number). They will pick two cards from the deck and perform multiplication on the two
numbers to land on one of the moon phases.
If the sums are:
0-12 move to Moon phase 1
13-22 move to Moon phase 2
23-32 move to Moon phase 3
33-42 move to Moon phase 4
43-52 move to Moon phase 5
53-62 move to Moon phase 6
63-72 move to Moon phase 7
73-82 move to Moon phase 8
They will then have to write the name of the moon phase on the line. If the student picks
up two cards and cannot perform the operation that will allow them to land on a new
moon phase then their turn is skipped and play moves to the next person. Play continues
until someone gets all of the moon phases. *They must be labeled in the correct order
for that person to win*
