Staff Nurse

N.B. The Nursing Department works on a team basis


and each member of the team is expected to fully
contribute to the work of the department.

1.4 Health An independent medical advisor appointed by the hospital


will carry out a pre-employment medical.

1.5 Probationary period Permanent appointment is subject to a probationary


period of 6 months, which if required may be extended.

1.6 Hours of Work 39 hours each week exclusive of meal breaks, with
flexibility (regarding actual working hours) to suit the local
work practices and demands of the service.

2.0 Purpose of Post To work in collaboration with the Nursing team to


ensure excellence in Patient Care through a well
educated and highly motivated team or carers and the
effective and efficient use of resources. Patient Care
must be at the forefront of your concern; every patient is
to be treated as an individual and provided with high
quality care in terms of courtesy, kindness, interest and
efficiency.
3.0 Duties & Responsibilities
1. Practice within the scope of practice, policies and
procedures, legal requirements, guidelines and standards as
directed by the Nursing Department and An Bord Altranais
2. Provide effective and efficient nursing care by:
3. Planning, implementing and evaluating care given to
patients from admission to discharge
4. Completing nursing assessment care plan and other
relevant documentation
5. Report verbally and in writing, pertinent patient care
information to appropriate nursing/medical staff and other clinical
staff.
6. Liaise with and co-operate with other departments as
required.
7. Ensure all documentation relating to patient is accurately
maintained in the patient’s medical records in line with policy and
procedures and the record kept in a confidential manner and
using only approved abbreviations.
8. Comply with the medications policy ensuring that
regulations for the safekeeping and recording of scheduling
drugs are adhered to at all times.
9. Display a professional, courteous and caring liaison with
patient and their relatives, staff and all other services users.

10. Update hospital information systems as required.

11. Function effectively and quickly in an emergency situation

12. Provide care with minimal supervision and takes charge of the
department in the absence of the CNM1.
13. Use discretion and decision making regarding patient care, referring
appropriately to CNM1, CNM2, Medical Staff or the disciplines.

14. Follow appropriate lines of authority by discussing issues first with


the CNM1 and CNM2 or in circumstances were under direction of
Nurse in Charge or CEO.
15. Takes responsibility for stock control, ensuring adequate levels of
required supplies are held on the department at all times.
16. Contributes to Nursing “Best Practice” by assisting in identifying
recurrent nursing problems and implementing evidence-based
practices.
17. Ensure all adverse occurrences and/or difficulties concerning
patients and staff are reported to Nurse in Charge, documenting full
details as per Hospital Policy
18. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as required by the Nurse
in Charge / CEO.
19. maintain and uphold procedures in relation to patient confidentiality
and safe-keeping of patient records
20. To Support the achievement and maintenance of Hospital
Accreditation standards

4.0 Confidentiality The post holder must maintain the confidentiality of
information about patients, staff and other health
service business in accordance with Hospital Policy.
