“There Are So Many Immigrants in United States”
The United States is a country of immigrants. After the Native Americans, all people here have an immigrant
past. The first European immigrants arrive in Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. They arrive by ship from England.
Many groups of immigrants arrive and black slaves arrive in Jamestown in 1619. The immigrants form 13
colonies under England. The colonies celebrate their Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. They want
independence from England. George Washington is the first president. There are 13 stars and stripes on the
first U.S. flag.

In the 1900’s, many more immigrants are coming to the United States. Ever gone wants jobs, freedom and an
education. Many of the new immigrants are Asian and from the Americas. Between 1971-75, about 385,000
arrive each year. From 1942-1988 many more arrive without papers to work. Many Americans think that the
U.S.A. is a great country because of the immigrants energy.

WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?

Communication is an exchange of information or messages. A sender sends a message to a


receiver, who sends another message back. That process involves five important parts:
 Sender: Person, animal or machine which begins the process of communication and produces a need to
communicate.
 Code: It is a set of signals and their meanings. For example the traffic light system.
 The Channel: It is the way in which the signal is carried. Face the channels are the sound and light waves
that carry your words and facial expressions. When you listen radio, the channel is a radio frequency.
 Signal: It is the sound, image, electrical or chemical impulse that is send. The image of your smiling face
is a signal. Electrical signals are exchanged by machines, and chemical signals are given off humans and
animals.
 Receiver: It is the person, animal or machine which receives the signal and interprets it according to the
code. The communication cycle is completed when the receiver gets the message correctly and responds,
the receivers then becomes the sender in the second half of the communication process.

IMPROVING YOUR VOCABULARY

If you want to improve your vocabulary you have to work to increase it. How can you do it?. Read
carefully the following suggestions:

 Develop Vocabulary consciousness.


Try to become curious about new words. As you watch television, listen to the radio, read the newspaper,
look at advertisements, listen to you parents and teachers, you have to stay alert with the new words. Once
you hear a new word, look into its background and make it your own.
 Read:
The best way to improve your vocabulary is reading good books and good magazines. If you read
challenging books, you will begin to absorb new words almost unconsciously. If you found words that are
new for you, you can look up them in your dictionary and add new words to your vocabulary.
 Play word games and do word puzzles.
One good way to learn words and have fun at the same time is to play word games and do crossword
puzzles. This kind of activity will help you to add new words to your vocabulary.
 Turn on the pages of your dictionary.
When you have a few minutes to spare, it could be interesting for you if you look up for new, unusual and
interesting words, and of course, learn them.
 Make a list of all the new words you want to learn.
You could make a list of the new words that you want to learn, and investigate the meaning, uses and
pronunciation. Keep these notes in a vocabulary notebook. As a personal activity you can make small
vocabulary cards and on the front of the card you can write the new word, and on the back of the card you
can write its meaning, pronunciation, and a sentence indicating how to use it. Try to do this, and you will
improve your vocabulary.

No. 2 VANESA’S VACATIONS

Vanesa has a good time in her vacation when she is in Antigua Guatemala. She take her camera with her
and get some interesting pictures of the ruins, churches and nice Antigua views. She thinks it is a very beautiful
city. On her last night there she will go to a nice little restaurant called “La Fonda de Doña Leonor”. She will
have chicken and potatoes for dinner and will listen to marimba music. Berfore she will leave Antigua, she will
buy some postcards for her friends in Antigua central park.

Jose Perez will meet her at the bus station when she comes home. She says she would like to come back again.
