Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

There are a few different ways that Universal Design for Learning could be addressed for this lesson. For this
lesson the students are going to be watching the PowerPoint or MP4 file and trying to recognize shapes. One
way that we incorporate Universal Design for Learning is to allow the students to have manipulatives that
they can touch when looking at the shape on the screen. We could have the names of the possible shapes
that they might have listed in the classroom somewhere. Then we could also allow them to write their answer
or discuss their answer with their group.

Lesson idea implementation:

This lesson will begin by having the students looking at different kinds of shapes. They will be learning about
circles, triangles, squares and rectangles. I will have the students in groups where each table is all about one
of the shapes. The students will rotate between the stations to learn about each of the individual shapes. This
process should take about 20-30 minutes. At each of the stations the students will be drawing the shape,
looking at different objects that are that shape and they will be learning about the attributes of the shape. All
the centers will have different sizes of each shape. I will be walking around at this point asking guiding
questions to allow for higher levels of thinking and I will be asking these questions to assess the students
understanding.
After all centers are over I will have the students come back together. I will pass our one of each shape to
each group of students. I will play the PowerPoint or MP4 and have the students say their guesses aloud.
After the movie is over I will have the students come back together and allow them to tell me different facts
about what they learned today. I will assess their knowledge by asking questions to see if they understand the
content. Then I will have the students name each shape when using different things around the classroom.

Reflective Practice:
The activity that I created could impact students learning by allowing them to learn about shapes and what
makes each shape. In the future I think a great activity that could extend the students learning would be to
have the students go home and find an object that is one of the shapes that we learned about and draw it and
describe it to share with the class.
