Residents of the RM of Piney and Buffalo Point First Nation

The Manitoba government has renewed the agreement with the Altru Health System and the LifeCare
Medical Center in Warroad and Roseau, Minnesota. Effective August 1, 2018 the following provides
information for residents about their provincial health care insurance coverage when receiving care at
these sites.

Will emergency and primary care services still be covered?


Yes, coverage for emergency and primary care services will continue for Manitoba residents from the RM of
Piney and Buffalo Point First Nation at Altru Health System and LifeCare Medical Center facilities in Warroad
and Roseau, Minnesota.

What if I need to be referred for an appointment to see a specialist?


Patients who need to see a specialist will need to be referred to a Manitoba specialist. Specialist care is not
covered under this agreement, except in the case of an emergency.

I’ve been seeing a healthcare provider in the United States for some time. How will a Manitoba
healthcare provider know about my healthcare history?
Healthcare providers at the Altru and LifeCare sites will work with patients to ensure they have access to their
health records to give to Manitoba healthcare providers.

What if I receive care at another site in the United States (ex: Grand Forks, North Dakota)?
Services at other sites in the United States are not covered under this agreement. For information on the
emergency care coverage provided under the provincial health plan while travelling or vacationing outside of
Canada, please refer to our website at http://www.gov.mb.ca/health/mhsip/index.html#Q13 or call Manitoba

What about physiotherapy or rehabilitation services?


Physiotherapy and rehabilitation services are not covered under the agreement. If you are currently receiving
physiotherapy or rehabilitation therapy in Roseau or Warroad, please talk to your healthcare provider directly
about any concerns with coverage and your treatment plan. The Manitoba government has committed to
working directly with the Altru Health System and LifeCare Medical Center to help patients in this situation.

What if I need an ambulance?


In the event of an emergency, ambulance services can be accessed in Manitoba by calling 911. The Manitoba
Transport Coordination Centre will dispatch the appropriate transport service.

What if I am transferred by ambulance from Warroad or Roseau to a hospital in Manitoba?


Ambulance transfers are not an insured benefit under the provincial health plan or under the agreement. Any
costs incurred are the responsibility of the patient.

What if I am transferred by ambulance from Warroad or Roseau to another site in the United States?
Ambulance services, including air ambulance from Warroad or Roseau to other hospitals in the United States,
are not covered under this agreement. Any costs are the responsibility of the patient.
