ITEC 7460 - One-Hour Instructional Technology Workshop

Title: How to create assignment and gather data in the TurningPoint Student Respond Systems.

Overview: TurningPoint is an assessment tool that allows students to participate in real-time

using their own device or school issued devices. A variety of interactive polling options are
available to meet the unique needs of each and every instructor. Teachers are issued a kit to
use in their classes for instruction and assessment. Teacher do not receive any formal training
on the use of the TurningPoint application or devices. Teachers rely on their peers for training
and troubleshooting.

This Instructional Technology Workshop is being developed to address this TurningPoint

training needs of the teachers. Through a formative needs assessment was not conducted, the
training needs of the teachers have been assessed through casual conversations and request
for assistants in using the TurningPoint Software. The focus of this workshop will be creating
assessments, administrating assessments, and analyzing data.

Date/Location: April 24, 2018; collative planning meeting period in Room 209, Sequoyah
Middle School

Learning Objectives:
 Educators will create assessment in PowerPoint that are compatible with
TurningPoint
 Educators will develop multiple types of assessment questions
 Educators will use TurningPoint to administer class assessments
 Educators will export data from student assessment given using the TurningPoint
platform

NETS-T Standards:

Standard 2: Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments

Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment
incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to
develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S.

Teachers:

their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own
educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress.
c) Customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning
styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources.
d) Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments
aligned with content and technology standards, and use resulting data to inform
learning and teaching.

TKES Standards:
Performance Standard 2: Instructional Planning
The teacher plans using state and local school district curricula and standards, effective
strategies, resources, and data to address the differentiated needs of all students.

Performance Standard 5: Assessment Strategies

The teacher systematically chooses a variety of diagnostic, formative, and
summative assessment strategies and instruments that are valid and appropriate for the
content and student population.

Performance Standard 6: Assessment Uses

The teacher systematically gathers, analyzes, and uses relevant data to measure
student progress, to inform instructional content and delivery methods, and to provide
timely and constructive feedback to both students and parents.

TurningPoint Workshop
Evaluation Data & Narrative

Clayton County Public Schools has a focus on infusing technology into every classroom

throughout the district. This infusion has come with an emphasis on assessment technology.

Because students are now required to take the Georgia Milestones Assessment System (GMAS)

test and End-of-Course (EOC) test online, the district is prioritizing giving the students as many

opportunities to test online, as possible.

Sequoyah Middle School administration has encouraged the teaching staff to use the

TurningPoint platform to assess students during their class. TurningPoint is an online

assessment platform that gives teachers and students instant feedback on an assessment, while

the evaluation is conducted. Tho this tool is in every classroom, the teachers at Sequoyah

Middle School do not use the platform consistently. Teachers were asked, informally, why they

do not use the system during their grade-level and faculty meetings. Some teachers stated lack

of training, while others said that it was easier to give an assessment using pencil and paper.

Based on the teachers' comments and concerns, the presenter requested to conduct a

workshop for the staff on using TurningPoint. The presenter was granted permission by the

administration to conduct the workshop during the connections teachers' planning period. The

workshop was originally scheduled for April 17, 2018, and an email invitation was sent out, but

due to an unscheduled mandatory testing meeting, it had to be postponed. The presenter was

given a new date of April 24, 2018, as the new date of the workshop.
The workshop was conducted in an open format, with the teachers asking questions as

they worked through the agenda. The teachers seem to stay attentive and inquisitive

throughout the workshop, working along with the presenter on the workshop learning

objectives. At the end of the workshop, the teachers completed an anonymous workshop

evaluation survey. Based on the data collected from the survey, all of the responding teachers

found the resources used in the workshop appropriate. The surveyed teachers also responded

in the affirmative, with 25% agreeing and 75% strongly agreeing that the TurningPoint

workshop would better able them to use technology for assessment of students' learning in

their classroom. An area of concern highlighted in the data from the survey was the perceived

lack of time and opportunity to develop the necessary technology skills to teach effectively.

The teachers responded to this question with 58.4% agreeing or strongly agreeing and 41.6

responding a neutral, disagree, or strongly disagree response. To address the lack of training

opportunity at the school, the presenter will share the data from the survey with the school's

administration. The presenter will also offer follow-up workshops on various instructional

technology topics.
