1 Overview

In this chapter This chapter introduces the DXX 6340 node.

1.1 Introduction

DXX 6340 node product The DXX 6340 node product family is part of the Ericsson product range for tele-
family communication transmission networks based on the standards and recommenda-
tions of SDH from ETSI and ITU.
The DXX 6340 node provides a single hardware platform to build STM-1, STM-4
and STM-16 SDH multiplexers.
The DXX 6340 node can be configured into add-drop multiplexers, terminal mul-
tiplexers or cross-connects as required (ADM, TM, and SDXC). The DXX 6340
node is available with a wide range of interfaces. STM-1, STM-4, STM-16 and
Ethernet interfaces are required for building the whole range of ADM1, ADM4 and
ADM16 network elements. On the tributary side both PDH, SDH and Ethernet in-
terfaces are supported. The following range of PDH interfaces 2 Mbit/s, 34 Mbit/
s, 45 Mbit/s are available.
Using the DXX 6340 node it is possible to build ring, line and meshed networks,
making it suited for all typical SDH applications.

Equipment protection In the DXX 6340 node family it is possible to add equipment protection to the net-
work element. This makes configurations with “no single point of failure” possible.
All interfaces and modules can be either equipment protected or network protected.

2 Introduction to Installation Information

In the installation This part of the manual describes the procedures for installing the various items of
information the DXX 6340 node.

Prerequisite for using this This manual assumes that the reader has been informed about the specific system
manual configuration to be installed.

Safety considerations To understand the possible hazards involved at laser radiation from optical trans-
mitters, please make sure to read ‘3 Safety Considerations’ on page 27 before in-
stalling the equipment.

Preparations before It is assumed that the cables for external interfaces are prepared before the instal-
installing the DXX 6340 lation of the DXX 6340 node begins. Find information about the connectors on the
node DXX 6340 node subrack (SF4) in ‘11.4 Specifications’ on page 98, and connectors
on the rack connection field (RCF) in ‘10.3 Specifications’ on page 93.

Identification labels The rack, subrack and each module is provided with identification labels, which are
located either on the front or the sides.

Examples The figure shows examples of identification labels on the modules and explains
which information is included.

Already installed items In this manual you may find installation procedures for items that might already be
installed from the factory. In these situations you just go to the next installation pro-
cedure in the manual.

3 Safety Considerations

In this chapter This chapter describes the safety considerations to be taken before the installation
is performed. It includes the following topics:
• ‘3.1 General Information on SDH Interfaces’ on page 27
• ‘3.2 Laser Apertures on DXX 6340 Node Equipment’ on page 28

3.1 General Information on SDH Interfaces

Safety classification The DXX 6340 node is classified as a Class 1 laser product in accordance with IEC
825, i.e. exposure to hazardous laser radiation is impossible during normal opera-
tion and maintenance. When the system has been installed, the laser radiation is ef-
fectively enclosed in the optical fibre path between optical modules at each end.
The applied lasers are embedded 1300 or 1550 nm wavelength semiconductor la-
sers.
In case of an interruption of the optical fibre path by accident (e.g. cable rupture)
an automatic safety mechanism will result in a periodic shutdown of the transmitter
laser. Hence, the laser radiation from any fibre end is restricted to a 2 second peri-
od, which is repeated every 70 seconds. With less than 0 dBm (L-1.1 and L-1.2)
radiated optical power during the 2 second period, the time averaged power is less
than -15 dBm, which is harmless at relevant wavelengths.
Exposure to laser radiation risked during service or installation can be hazardous
in case of double fault conditions.

IEC825 classification limits The following table shows the IEC825 classification limits of optical power radi-
ated from single mode fibre ends.

• TEX1P
Supports 1:N protection
• TEX1Pm
Supports 1:N protection and is provided with monitoring function.
• Resync
TEX resync has the capability of resynchronising the outgoing plesiochronous
2 Mbit/s signals to a 2 MHz clock derived from the internal system clock (T0).
It contains a two-frame buffer to absorb wander for each 2 Mbit/s output. If
wander or frequency differences between SDH frequency T0 and 2 Mbit/s sig-
nals causes a phase variation of 125 µs a well defined 2 Mbit/s frame slip will
occur (32 bytes). The resynchronisation function will look for frame informa-
tion in the 2 Mbit/s signal and insert AIS upon LOF. Recalculation of a possible
CRC-4 is not performed upon a frame slip.
• Monitoring function
TEX1Pm monitor function has the capability of monitoring the 2 Mbit PDH
signals. In FP2.0 PDH monitoring and AIS detection is included.

Circuits The module comprises the following circuits:

• Tributary
• Overhead access
• Local control

-38V to -40.5V. If UB2 is not available, the power supply will shut down at volt-
ages between -40.5V and -38V. If UB2 is available and used as the main source,
the power supply shuts down at voltages below -36V.
The input is common-mode filtered and protected against over- and reversed volt-
age.
Two filtered output voltages of +5 V and -5 V are obtained. All outputs are imple-
mented with powershare circuits. This ensures that modules connected in parallel
share the actual power level equally. The outputs are protected against short-cir-
cuiting. Integrated in the Control Section is a Start Up and a Soft Start circuit to
ensure that the power supply can be plugged in/out at any time without interrupting
the system. Additionally, the output voltages are within specifications even under
low power load.
The local control provides digital monitoring for Input Source, and Analog moni-
toring of Input Source level, Power load, tertiary voltages and temperature.

Protection It is possible to implement m:n protection of power supplies for redundancy pur-
poses.

Switching on the PS After insertion into the backplane, the PS switches on.
