Goodrich A-7 Brake Case.
In 1968, the B. F. Goodrich Corporation won a contract for the design of the brakes for
the Navy A-7 aircraft with an innovative four-rotor brake design. Testing showed, however, that
the four-rotor system would not function in accordance with government specifications.
Managers attempted to show that the brakes did meet government test standards by directing that
the brakes should be allowed to coast longer between applications than allowed by military
specifications, be cooled by fans between and during test runs, and be remachined between test
runs. Upon learning about these gross violations of governmental standards, Searle Lawson, a
young, recently graduated mechanical engineer, and Kermit Vandivier, a technical writer,
informed the FBI, which in turn alerted the Government Accounting Office. Vandivier was fired
by Goodrich, and Lawson resigned and went to work for another company.

profession, observe the standards of
professional practice, safeguard the

colleagues in the professions, and fulfill
his duties and obligations as a citizen

As a Mechanical engineering graduate, he
should take the responsibility regarding to
any mechanical practices and issues.
Instead of resigning, the mechanical
engineers shall fix all the mechanical
problems included.
Resigning is not the solution to solve any
problems, it will cause another problem if
you did not finish any upon agreement.
Being professional is not only to the degree
or status you’ve done, it is also to the
attitude that you need to learn while taking
your desired profession.

Rule 10. Whenever he designs a
mechanical equipment, machinery or
process, or prepares the layout of a
project, he must apply an adequate
factor of safety, and provide for the
necessary leeway for proper operating
and maintenance conditions.
Talk to person in charge especially to the
person between the agreement so that you
can help each other and understand the
situation.
Any unfinished contract or agreement is
punishable by law if you did not stick to the
plan or what talked about. The best thing is
finish all the agreement and always follow
the instructions or specifications.
He should consult first and discuss the
issue within corporation to at least show
respect to his associates and colleagues.
Since he just recently graduated he will
need to cope up within the industry, so
acting hastily will be not likely advisable.
If things would still be against the law, or If
the corporation still engage to gross
violations of the governmental standards
this would be the right time to consult the
issue to the authority.
The B.F. Goodrich Corporation should not
compromise for this project. The
corporation will be reponsible for the
welfare of the Navy A-7 aircraft so they
should perform proper testing on the
aircraft. It is a must to apply an adequate
factor of safety on the aircraft. They must
be transparent on the governmental
standards and make sure that they follow it
as planned.
