A HEAVENLY OVERFLOW

19 So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay
attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star
arises in your hearts. 20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a
matter of one’s own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of
human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
Peter was urging his readers about the prophetic nature of Scripture. The prophecies
they read in the Old Testament were not just words of insight but of power. These
words were special words — God’s words. And we thank the Holy Spirit that the gift of
prophecy is very much active today. It is an excessive overflow from God because, if
you really think about it, God has given us everything — even His only Son. And yet He
continues to give, through the gift of prophecy, strategies, truths, insights, hope and
power!
The prophetic word is
GOD’S WAY THROUGH
21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the
Holy Spirit spoke from God.
The Author and Source of every prophecy — from the words in Scripture to the words
of knowledge we receive today — is the Holy Spirit. The writers of the Bible received
prophetic words. And these words of revelation gave insight to heavenly truths —
truths that could never be perceived by mere human minds. Through prophetic
revelations, the believers of old were able to understand God’s work and God’s plan for
a Messiah to save the whole world.
And today, the same gift of prophecy that operated when the Bible was written is
available to us. Through the gift of prophecy, the Holy Spirit reveals truths that no eye
has seen, no ear has heard and no mind has conceived for God’s people. These
precious heavenly words are fruitful, productive, transforming, holy, powerful, good and
profitable for those who pay attention to it.
GOD’S WAY OUT
19 So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay
attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star
arises in your hearts.
We are not in heaven yet. We continue to live in a dark place where God is often
denied. The Greek word for “dark” is auchmērō (αὐχμηρῷ) meaning dry, dirty and
miserable. The more appropriate translation is actually “a waste place”. A commentary
describes it as “either the wilderness of this world or the tangled life of the imperfect
Christian”.
But praise God, the prophetic word is like a lamp (Greek: λύχνῳ or lychnō) for us in
our waste place. Like a lamp, it is personal, portable and practical. It brings relief to
times of distress and provides light in our darkest situations. The prophetic word gives
us God’s insights, plans, instruction, encouragement and even rebuke. It is there for us
to use! He gives it to us as we navigate our way through the wasteland until we reach
the glorious fulfilment of all He has in store for us.
YOUR WAY UP
19 Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable…(NABRE)

You can rely on the prophetic word to help you in all aspects of your life, may it be a
major or minor concern. If it matters to you, it matters to the Holy Spirit. He will speak
to make sure you succeed. The prophetic word is your “reliable” way up no matter
what your situation may be.
The Greek word for "reliable" or "made more sure" is bébaios (βέβαιος) meaning
“good enough to walk on”. The prophetic word is a precious heavenly overflow that
you can trust and depend on. It may not be perfect or infallible like Scripture, but it is
enough for you to walk on. It is enough to push you to keep believing and expecting. It
is firm enough to be sure that God is working faithfully for the words you received to
come to pass. The prophetic word is your way up — to progress, to breakthrough, to
victory!
