General Instruction: Choose appropriate values wherever necessary

Answer ALL the Questions

1. a) Fibers find application in Hybrid/Fiber Coax (HFC) TV Networks and Digital [10]
Subscriber Loop. Give a detailed report.

b) i) Compare asynchronous and plesiochronous digital multiplexing schemes with [5]

SONET/SDH multiplexing strategies.
ii) What are the advantages and disadvantages associated with Free Space Optical [5]
technology?

2. a) Provide a detailed analysis of the types of splicing and the losses associated with it. [10]

b) Analyze the effect of chromatic, waveguide and polarization mode dispersions on [10]
bandwidth –length product of an optical communication link.

3. a) Draw a detailed functional block diagram of a receiver and write a brief explanation of [10]
the function of each of the receiver’s components.

b) A 1550 nm single mode digital fiber optic link needs to operate at 622Mb/s over 80 km [10]
without amplifiers. A single mode InGaAsP laser launches an average optical power
of 19.95mW into the fiber with a connector loss of 0.5 dB. The fiber has a loss of
0.35dB/km and there is a splice with a loss of 0.1dB every km. The coupling loss at the
receiver is 0.5dB, and the receiver uses an InGaAs APD with a sensitivity of -39dBm.
Excess noise penalties are predicted to be 1.5 dB. Set up an optical power budget for
this link and find the system margin. What is the system margin at 2.5 Gb/s with an
APD sensitivity of -31 dBm. Tabulate the link loss budget for the same.

4. a) With a neat schematic and energy band diagram explain the operation of EDFA and the [10]
method to achieve gain flatness in 1520 nm – 1580 nm range.

i) Arrayed waveguide grating.
ii) Reconfigurable optical Add-Drop multiplexers. [5]
[5]

5. a) i) Explain the processing involved in creating a packet interleaved TDM stream optical [10]
multiplexer and to extract the same in an optical demultiplexer with a neat diagram.

ii) Describe the different layers of Optical Transport Networks role of forward error [10]
correction codes in improving BER performance. Also show the mapping of various
payloads on OTN over DWDM.

OR

5. b) i) How is the effect of intermodal dispersion minimized in multimode graded index [8]
fibers?

ii) All optical signal processing techniques improve the processing speed. Prove it [12]
with examples.
