Lesson Idea Name: Constructing with Circles

Content Area: Geometry
Grade Level(s): 9th-11th

Content Standard Addressed: MGSE9-12.G.C.1 Understand that all circles are similar.
MGSE9-12.G.C.2 Identify and describe relationships among inscribed angles, radii, chords, tangents, and secants. Include
the relationship between central, inscribed, and circumscribed angles; inscribed angles on a diameter are right angles; the
radius of a circle is perpendicular to the tangent where the radius intersects the circle.
MGSE9-12.G.C.3 Construct the inscribed and circumscribed circles of a triangle, and prove properties of angles for a
quadrilateral inscribed in a circle.
MGSE9-12.G.C.4 Construct a tangent line from a point outside a given circle to the circle.

Technology Standard Addressed: Creative Communicator

Selected Technology Tool: Geogebra

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): For students that need translation this website and lessons are
available in almost every language. Students can go at their own pace with step by step instructions making
this lesson accessible and comprehensible to learners of all levels.

Lesson idea implementation: Students will be modeled an example of how to create a circle with a given
radius. Assign points to the circle and make perpendicular points, create tangent lines off the circumference
of the circle, and create inscribed polygons within the circle. After these concepts are introduced the students
will experiment and play with the software to get a better understanding of assignment. Students will be told
that they will need to construct a circle that contains at least three concepts that were introduced. Students
will be given at least 15 minutes within class to complete this assignment.

If the Students need longer they can complete this at home. Students will then be required to send a screen
shot of their creations and submit them to the google classroom page. This will allow a high form of thinking
in creating and applying technological skills in submission of their assignments. We will conclude the class by
showing the creation that I had constructed during their working time and will state that this will be
something that includes all thing required to receive full credit. Students work will be assessed and labeled
with corrections and comments at a later time.
Reflective Practice: I feel that it is important for students to be able to create something tangible with
technology and be able to step back and say “Wow I did that” or “Yeah I can do that no problem.” This builds
a sense of confidence in a world where technological implementation in necessary. Further requirements on
the rigor or length of this lesson can be added to apply deeper concepts.
