S5L1.  Obtain,  evaluate,  and  communicate  information  to  group  organisms  using  scientific  classification
procedures.
a.   Develop  a  model  that  illustrates  how  animals  are  sorted  into  groups  (vertebrate  and  invertebrate)  and
how  vertebrates  are  sorted  into  groups  (fish,  amphibian,  reptile,  bird,  and  mammal)  using  data  from
multiple  sources.
b.   Develop  a  model  that  illustrates  how  plants  are  sorted  into  groups  (seed  producers,  non-‐seed
producers)  using  data  form  multiple  sources.

Lesson  idea  implementation:

The  teacher  will  begin  the  lesson  by  playing  the  “Basic  Classification  of  Animal  Groups”  video.  The  students
will  be  told  to  write  down  the  five  different  groups  of  animals  that  they  see  and  take  notes  on  them.  After  the
video,  the  teacher  will  lead  a  short  discussion  about  the  five  groups  of  animals  (fish,  amphibians,  reptile,  bird,
and  mammal)  while  creating  an  anchor  chart  listing  the  different  facts  about  each  group.

The  students  will  be  grouped  in  groups  of  five.  Each  group  will  be  assigned  a  different  group  of  animals.
Students  will  research  information,  on  either  tablets  or  laptops,  about  their  given  topic  and  will  create  a
Popplet  over  their  research  to  present  to  the  class.  They  are  to  include  basic  facts  about  their  group  and  what
makes  them  different  from  the  others.  Each  student  in  the  group  will  have  a  specific  role  in  the  project:
researcher,  recorder,  technology  wizard  (Popplet  creator),  and  two  presenters.  The  students  will  choose
which  role  they  would  like.

Reflective  Practice:

To  move  this  lesson  to  a  LoTi  5,  the  teacher  could  publish  the  presentations  on  the  classroom  website.  The
students  could  also  create  a  podcast  over  their  presentations  to  share  on  the  classroom  website.
