Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Matter Trivia

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd
Content Standard Addressed: S2P1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the properties of
matter and changes that occur in objects.

Technology Standard Addressed:

1. Empowered Learner
Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in
their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.
Selected Technology Tool:
☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☒ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☒ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☐ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

 Supports ELLs
 Supports Visual Learners
 Helps students with attention disorders

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to the SRT activity, the students will have learned about properties of matter and the changes that occur
in each state. The students will have learned about different properties of matter such as liquids, solids, and
gases prior to the activity. To introduce the SRT activity, the teacher will review the content from the previous
lessons and then pass out the Plickers answer sheets.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: The teacher will ask the questions regarding
the properties of matter and the students will hold up their Plickers card with the answer of their choice. The

teacher will scan the room of students and see how many got the correct answer and at that time clear up
any misunderstandings among the students.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not? The teacher will use the correct answer to clear up any misunderstandings that the
students may have about the content presented.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the activity, the teacher will take the data and see which students may be struggling and which students
are ready to move on. The teacher will go over each of the answers and why they are right/wrong and will
have some of the students explain the answers to the class so that the students can hear it being explained by
their peers.

How will the data be used? The teacher will use the data from the assessment to decide which students will
need additional instruction, if any. The teacher will start the next days lesson by doing a review with the
students who missed any questions and allowing the other students to move on to the next activity.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. I hope that students are able to learn how to use this
type of technology and how the data can be used to improve their ability to learn the content.

Reflective Practice: To further this activity, the teacher can have the students create their own SRTs and use
this as a way toreview the material. For example, students can create Quizlet flash cards/quizzes and share it
with oneanother. To further this even more, we can post the students Quizlets on the class blog.
