Overview
Spacelabs Medical’s Modular Digital Multiview™ Telemetry System consists of patient transmitters,
receiver modules, PCMS™ or Ultraview® monitors, and the Universal Clinical Workstation (UCW®).
The transmitter monitors an ambulatory patient’s ECG signals and modulates them onto a UHF or
VHF radio signal that is picked up and processed by a telemetry receiver module. Up to eight
receiver modules may be plugged into a telemetry module housing connected to a central monitor.
Receiver modules may also be plugged directly into a bedside/transport monitor.

Introduction
Antenna input connectors (BNC) labeled ANT. 1 and ANT. 2 are provided on the front of the
receiver. Bedside or transport applications use a small whip antenna that is attached to either
antenna input. Central applications use a diversity antenna system attached to the back of the
module housing and routed to the receiver antenna inputs via cables available on the front of the
receiver housing.
The receiver module processes the patient’s ECG waveform data sent from the patient’s telemetry
transmitter. It automatically recognizes the various transmitter lead configurations that are possible
with the 90339, 90340-10, and 90341 transmitters. ECG data is processed in the receiver module.
Signal reception requires the use of a different UHF or VHF frequency (channel) assigned to each
receiver. In the U.S.A., these transmission frequencies are regulated by the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC). In other countries, these transmissions are regulated by the
local communications authority. Transmitter channel numbers differ depending on band of operation
(VHF or UHF) and type. For example, transmitter channel numbers range from 1 to 279 for the
90340-10 (UHF) and 301 to 579 for the 90341 (UHF).

CAUTION:
• Telemetry systems may be more susceptible to interference than hardwired
systems, which may impact patient safety.
• Do not install a telemetry receiver module into a bedside monitor that is
currently equipped with any other ECG module (hardwired or telemetry).
This could result in inaccurate patient waveform displays at remote
monitors.
• Use of hand-held wireless telephone equipment (e.g., cordless telephones,
etc.) near telemetry systems may cause system interference and should be
discouraged.

Receiver Housing
The receiver housing is used for centralized telemetry applications and connects directly to a central
monitor through an SDLC cable. It provides up to 8 plug-in slots for telemetry receiver modules.
Additional receiver modules may be utilized (up to 12 per PC2 monitor) by connecting another
receiver housing to the SDLC bus. A diversity antenna system plugs into the back of the housing.
Special dual cable assemblies on the front panel plug into each receiver’s antenna inputs (ANT. 1
and ANT. 2). Except for power ON/OFF switches (AC mains and battery), there are no operator
controls. An indicator lamp on the front panel lights when AC power is ON. An internal battery
provides at least ten minutes of operation when AC power is lost.

Unpacking
Each receiver module and receiver housing are packaged individually. Carefully unpack the receiver
housing. Take care when removing the packing material around the front panel not to damage the
antenna cables. These cables should be properly stowed in the appropriate cable ports on the front
bezel (refer to Receiver Housing on page 1-4).
Ensure that you do not turn the rear panel DC power switch ON. This unnecessarily drains the
battery. Remove the accessories from the packing carton (e.g., power cord, power cord retainer,
SDLC cable, and manual) to inspect each for damage. Also inspect the air filter on the bottom of the
receiver housing.
Unpack each receiver module from its shipping container for inspection. Save all packing materials
in case a part must be returned.

Setup
AC power input voltage configuration (115 or 230 VAC) for the receiver housing is determined by the
position of a selector switch in the fuse assembly. The currently selected voltage configuration is
identified in a small window on the fuse assembly.
To change the voltage selection:
1. Disconnect the AC power cord.
2. Pry open the fuse compartment located directly below the AC power switch on the back of
the receiver housing and, with a small screwdriver, pry out the fuse assembly.

CAUTION:
• When replacing fuses, ensure that the voltage selector remains in the
correct position.
Receiver Installation
! • If the SDLC bus is configured for 1-4 channels, as shown in the SDLC
Configurations section, use only slots 1-4.
4. After correctly inserting each module, plug the closest antenna cable to the receiver antenna
inputs (ANT. 1 and ANT. 2). The dual RF coax cable assemblies are routed out the front
bezel of the receiver housing to a dual BNC plug connector which plugs directly into a
receiver module. Each dual RF coax cable plug is installed with the rounded side up. RF
cables should be routed to installed receivers as illustrated below.

! • For module slots 1-4 (above), the upper connector in the plug corresponds to
ANT. 1 input on the rear panel; for module slots 5-8, the lower connector in the
plug corresponds to ANT. 1 input on the rear panel. This is done to simplify the
internal wiring and has no impact on performance. For module positions 5-8, do
not become alarmed that ANT. 1 input from the rear panel goes into ANT. 2 input
on the receiver and vice-versa. You must remember this fact when
troubleshooting antenna or diversity problems.

Receiver Module
The 90478 receiver module is a dual-conversion, dual-mode, diversity receiver with an ECG CPU
board installed. It is capable of receiving both wide-band (90340-10) and narrow-band (90339 and
90341) signals and can be installed in Spacelabs Medical PC, PC2, UCW, PC Scout, Ultraview
1030/1050, PC Express, Ultraview 1500/1700 monitors, and Ultraview 2400/2700/2800/3800
monitors.
The receiver module has five boards: the power supply, ECG CPU, antenna, digital, and RF boards.

Theory
Power and SDLC connections are made through the 15-pin D sub connector located on the back of
the module. This connector goes directly to the ECG CPU board. From here, power is routed to the
power supply board where power is conditioned for the RF and digital boards. The power supply
board also provides all signal connections between the CPU and digital boards. Command data is
exchanged between the CPU and the digital boards through a serial link. ECG data is delivered to
the ECG CPU board with the standard PWM signal used in digital telemetry.
The RF signal travels to the receiver module through the two BNC connectors on the module’s front.
These connectors are on the antenna board which then transfers incoming signals to the RF board.
The RF board has a synthesized local oscillator so all telemetry channels can be received. This
board demodulates the RF signal and passes on low level PWM to the digital board. The digital
board conditions the PWM signal and provides frame synchronization. After ensuring that valid data
is present, the digital board passes the PWM data to the CPU board where the PWM is demodulated
into ECG data and processed.
The CPU board is a modified version of the standard CPU board used in 90470 ECG modules. The
low pass filters for the high level outputs have been changed to accommodate the sampling rate
used in telemetry. All other hardware functions are the same.
The power supply receives +5 V and ±12 V from the CPU and supplies +5 V and ±10 V to the RF
and digital boards. Separate linear regulators are used for the RF and digital boards to isolate noise
from the RF board. +5 V is sent to the RF and digital board with only passive filtering. All of the
communications between the digital board and CPU board take place across the power supply
board through passive connections.
Antenna Board
The antenna board passes RF signals applied to the BNC connectors on the module front panel to
the RF board. The antenna board has no other active function.
RF Board
The RF board consists of a synthesizer for the first local oscillator and two receivers, one for wide-
band and one for narrow-band reception. The two antenna inputs are sent to a crossover switch that
performs the diversity switching. The type of data being received (wide or narrow) determines which
receiver is used to demodulate the PWM. The other receiver is then used to monitor the strength of
the RF signal on the other antenna to determine if diversity switching should take place. If it is
determined that the RF signal is greater on the unused antenna input, the antennas are switched
and operations continue. High dynamic range is obtained by using high third-order intercept mixers
in the front end. The mixers require a high power local oscillator to maintain linearity. A +20 dBm
local oscillator is generated on board to drive the mixers.

Digital Board
The digital board communicates with the ECG CPU and the RF boards to perform the decision
making tasks for the receiver. Commands from the CPU board specify the frequency and type of
data to be received. The digital board programs the synthesizer on the RF board to receive that
frequency. It then filters the PWM signal from the RF board and synchronizes the data, ensuring that
a proper signal is being received. Once the digital board confirms signal integrity, it passes the PWM
signal onto the CPU board where the PWM signal is converted into ECG data and sent over the
SDLC link for display.
RF Signals
Incoming RF signals from the diversity antenna system are connected via BNC coaxial cable to the
ANT 1 and ANT 2 input connectors on the rear panel. These connectors are part of the RF
preamp/splitter PCBA. The signals are routed on the board first through an 11 dB amplifier (one for
each antenna), then through an 8-way power splitter (one for each antenna). The loss of the splitter
is nominally 9.5 to 10 dB, so the net signal gain from the antenna inputs to the splitter outputs is +1
to +1.5 dB (although the board is allowed to have a signal loss as high as 1 dB).
The splitter outputs are routed, via the dual RF coaxial cable assemblies, to the module front panel
antenna input connectors. Each of the 8 dual coaxial cable assemblies contains 2 separate 50 ohm
cables. One cable connects to the ANT1 splitter output, while the other connects to the ANT2 splitter
output. The dual RF coaxial cable assemblies are routed out the front bezel of the 90479-A to a dual
BNC plug connector which plugs directly into a receiver module.
Analog Output
The 90479-A also provides analog high level output connectors on the rear panel. Two outputs are
available for each module on J500 and J600. Refer to the block diagram that follows for details.

Power Supply
The switching power supply provides regulated ±12 V and +5 V outputs to both module plug-in
cages and +12 V to the RF preamp/splitter PCBA and the two fans. The power supply also charges
the back-up battery pack. This battery pack consists of 2 +6 V sealed lead-acid cells connected in
series to provide at least 10 minutes of emergency power to the module housing on a full charge. All
module functions are maintained during battery operation.

Maintenance
Preventive Maintenance
Approximately every 180 days, a qualified Field Service Engineer should check the equipment for
acceptable performance levels and verify electrical safety requirements in accordance with local
standards.
Safety Verification
Safety testing of the telemetry equipment protects the patient from electrical shock, especially micro-
shock. It has been determined experimentally that current values in the microampere range may
cause fatal arrhythmias in electrically susceptible patients. A patient is deemed electrically
susceptible when connected to monitoring equipment.
WARNING:
• Never connect a patient to the equipment under test.
! • If the receiver module is used in bedside monitors, refer to the bedside monitor
service manual for safety testing instructions.

Diagnostics
Self-Test
Upon power-up, the module tests its internal memory (RAM and ROM). If a failure is detected, the
front-panel LED blinks and the module will not sign-on to the monitor.
LEDs
The 90478 receiver has 3 diagnostic LEDs that are visible by looking behind the module spring-
loaded handle as it is held open. To view these LEDs, swing the handle out as if you were going to
unplug the module and look inside the opening on the right side. The LEDs are located on the digital
PCBA and are known as LED3 (bottom), LED4 (middle), and LED5 (top).
LED5

LED4
(out-of-sync)
open handle
LED3 to see LEDS
(ANT 2/ANT1)
LED3 is amber when ON and identifies the active antenna input: ON indicates ANT 2; OFF indicates
ANT 1. LED3 is useful in troubleshooting diversity antenna problems or receiver RF PCBA
problems.
5-1
Modular Digital Telemetry — Service Manual
LED4 is red when ON and identifies receiver sync status: ON indicates an out-of-sync (OOS)
condition with no telemetry data being received; OFF indicates an in-sync (INS) condition with valid
telemetry data being received.
LED5 is green when ON and identifies the local oscillator (LO) lock status: ON indicates that the
module is properly connected to a monitor, is properly communicating with the monitor, has
programmed the receiver RF PCBA synthesizer, and the synthesizer is locked to the correct
frequency; OFF indicates that one of these conditions has failed.
Touchscreen Messages
SIGNAL INTERFERENCE
This condition could be caused by: intermodulation product causing channel crosstalk; or transmitter
dip switches (SW1 and SW2) not set correctly.
LOW BATTERY
This message indicates that battery voltage for the transmitter has fallen below 7.0 V. Operation of
the transmitter is impaired when battery voltage falls below 5.2 V. The amount of time from alarm to
fail for the battery depends greatly upon the type of battery in use. For alkaline batteries, typically
there is approximately another 8 hours before failure.
NOISY SIGNAL
This message indicates that ECG processing is invalid due to excessive noise. This noise may be a
result of patient motion, poor electrode/lead wire prep, muscle artifact, or 50/60Hz pick-up. If this
condition persists, appropriate steps must be taken to correct the cause.
Problem Solving
Frequent Squelch
Appearance of the 15 Hz squelch triangle waveform during monitoring indicates a data loss for at
least 2 sample periods. Because of the nature of RF communications, occasional short bursts of
squelch on any given channel are to be expected. These are attributed to conditions such as a
signal null or RF noise which can be likened to the short pops or clicks that are heard when using a
2-way voice radio.
In a telemetry system, occurrences of squelch should be very infrequent; however, if squelch occurs
frequently (on a per channel basis) or if the duration of squelch is often longer than 1 second, it
indicates a possible system problem from external interference, poor antenna system coverage, a
defective component in the antenna system, a defective transmitter, a weak battery in the
transmitter, or a defective receiver.
To isolate a squelch problem:
If squelch frequently occurs on more than 1 channel, suspect a problem with the common
equipment: antenna system, the preamp-splitter PCBA in the module housing, etc.
Observe LED4 (refer to LEDs on page 5-1) on several receivers. If many are OOS (out of sync)
often or for long periods, suspect a problem with the antenna system gain or coverage area.
Alternatively, the preamp-splitter PCBA in the 90479-A receiver housing may be defective.
5-2
Troubleshooting
Observe LED3 on several channels. If the diversity antenna system is functioning correctly, LED3
should be switching between ON and OFF regularly. About half the time should be spent ON and
half OFF (if the transmitters are stationary, LED3 will not switch as often). If this is not happening on
several channels, suspect a problem with one of the diversity antenna sides or with the preamp-
splitter PCBA in the receiver housing.
The preamp-splitter PCBA in the receiver housing contains a preamp followed by an 8-way splitter
for each antenna input (refer to block diagram in THEORY). The gain of this combination is
approximately 0dB. To assess the functionality of the board, monitor the RF signal amplitude at the
output of the antenna 1 cable at the rear panel of the receiver housing. Reconnect this cable and
monitor the antenna 1 output on one of the front panel RF cables. If these levels are approximately
the same, the preamp-splitter board is functioning correctly. Repeat these measurements for
antenna 2. (It may be necessary to check all 16 front panel wall outputs to verify that a cable is not
bad.)
If squelch occurs frequently on only one channel, verify that the transmitter has a fresh battery and is
operating within the antenna coverage area. Then check to see if the antenna lead wire (the RA lead
on a 90339 or 90341, or the RL lead on a 90340 transmitter) is properly connected to the transmitter
and is not damaged.
Tune an unused receiver to the same channel number. If the problem occurs on both receivers,
suspect an interference problem. Using the spectrum analyzer, check for the occurrence of co-
channel or adjacent channel interference. It may be necessary to turn OFF the telemetry transmitter
to observe co-channel interference. Ensure that you observe long enough to capture an intermittent
problem. If no interference is found, suspect a defective transmitter.
If the second receiver is not experiencing squelch, first suspect a cable problem at the receiver
input. Swap antenna input cables between the two modules. If the problem now appears on the
second module, suspect a defective cable. If the problem stays with the first module, suspect a
defective receiver module.
Observe LED3. If the transmitter is moving, LED3 should be switching between ON and OFF fairly
regularly and should spend about half its time ON and half OFF. If this is not the case, and operation
of the diversity antenna system and cables has been verified, suspect a defective RF PCBA in the
module.
1. If a telemetry channel will not sign-on to the monitor, verify that the correct DC power is
applied to the module SDLC connector. If not, the problem lies in the monitor power supply
or in the receiver housing’s power supply (depending upon which you are using).
2. Try the module in a different housing bay. If this fixes the problem, suspect a connector
problem, a power problem, or an SDLC problem.
5-3
Modular Digital Telemetry — Service Manual
3. If you are hosting 90478 modules on a central station, verify that the monitor S/W version is
3.62.31 or higher for PC2, 3.53.41 or higher for PC.
4. If the receiver front-panel LED is ON but the module has not signed on, there is a hardware
failure on the CPU PCBA. Likewise, if the front-panel LED is blinking, then the CPU PCBA
failed the internal RAM/ROM memory test. In either case, replace the CPU PCBA.
5. If a module fails to sign-on and other modules do sign-on in the same module bay, then the
CPU PCBA needs to be replaced.
1. Verify that proper SDLC terminations are used both on the central monitor (if applicable) and
on the receiver module housing (if applicable), or remote module housing (if applicable).
2. Verify the continuity of the SDLC cable from the receiver or remote module housing to the
monitor. If the cable is defective, replace it.
3. Verify the continuity of the short SDLC cable connected between J200 and J300 on the rear
panel of the receiver module housing (if applicable).
4. Verify that all AC/DC power is turned ON and functioning correctly.
5. Check the length of the SDLC cable running between the monitor and the remote housing
(90479-A, 90431, or 90485).
6. Verify that all SDLC connectors are properly assembled, are not damaged, are properly
connected to the cable shield, and are properly secured to the mating receptacles with
screws.
7. Ensure that a hospital grade power cord is used and plugged into a working, grounded AC
outlet.
8. Verify that the AC mains switch (right side of rear panel) is ON. The AC power indicator lamp
should be illuminated on the front bezel. The unit should operate for a minimum of
10 minutes on internal battery power if no AC power is available.
9. Verify that the DC power switch (left side of rear panel) is ON. You should be able to feel
and hear air movement from the fans. If not, a power supply problem is likely.
10. Check the AC input fuses by carefully removing the AC entry module cover on the rear
panel. This operation requires that the line cord be disconnected from the AC entry module
and a small tool such as a screwdriver is used to pry the cover off. The fuses are attached
to the inside of the cover along with the voltage selector board. Check the fuses for
continuity. Replace the cover with good fuses ensuring that the voltage selector card is set
so that the desired line voltage is visible through the window in the cover, and the white
arrow on the cover aligns with the white arrow on the body of the AC entry module. Press
gently but firmly until the cover snaps back into place. Re-connect the AC line cord and
check for proper operation.
11. Verify that all DC voltages (±12 V and +5 V) are present on the module SDLC connectors.
Check at least one connector from Channels 1-4 and one connector from Channels 5-8. If
proper voltages appear on one and not the other, then a wiring fault is likely. Disconnect AC
power, turn OFF the DC switch on the rear panel and remove the cover. Inspect the wiring
between the power supply and module backplanes for opens, shorts or damage.
12. If proper voltages do not appear on any module SDLC connector, then suspect a faulty
power supply.

Appendix A — Electromagnetic Compatibility
! • The 90341, 90478, and 90479-A are intended for use in an electromagnetic
environment in which radiated RF disturbances are controlled. The customer or
user of this equipment can help prevent electromagnetic interference by
maintaining a minimum distance between portable and mobile RF
communications equipment (transmitters) and the module. Minimum distances,
according to the maximum output power of the communications equipment, are
listed in the table below.
Conducted RF 150 kHz to 150 kHz to 80 MHz Portable and mobile RF communications equipment
IEC 61000-4-6 80 MHz 3 V r.m.s. should be used no closer to any part of the monitor,
3 V r.m.s. 1 kHz sine including cables, than the recommended separation
80% AM distance calculated from the equation applicable to the
frequency of the transmitter.
Radiated RF 80 MHz to 80 MHz to 2.5 GHz Recommended separation distance:
IEC 61000-4-3 2.5 GHz 3 V/m 3.5
3 V/m 1 kHz sine d= [V1 ]

* Field strengths from fixed transmitters, such as base stations for radio (cellular/cordless) telephones and land
mobile radios, amateur radio, AM and FM radio broadcast, and TV broadcast cannot be predicted theoretically
with accuracy. To assess the electromagnetic environment due to fixed RF transmitters, an electromagnetic site
survey should be considered. If the measured field strength in the location in which the monitors are used
exceeds the applicable RF compliance level above, the monitors should be observed to verify normal operation.
If abnormal performance is observed, additional measures may be necessary, such as reorienting or relocating
the monitors.
** Over the frequency range of 150 kHz to 80 MHz, field strengths should be less than [ V1 ] V/m.

Note 1: At 80 MHz and 800 MHz, the separation distance for the higher frequency range applies.
Note 2: These guidelines may not apply in all situations. Electromagnetic propagation is affected
by absorption and reflection from structures, objects, and people.
