This document is subjected to check the line size as supporting document for the submitted P&ID.

2. LINE SIZING CRITERIA

2.1 DESIGN BASIS
2.1.1 Acceptable minimum pipe size for process lines shall be 2" nominal pipe size (NPS) except that
3/4" line may be used for auxilary piping, vent, drain, etc.

2.1.2 Pipe roughness for all calculation pressure drop shall be as follows :
Carbon steel pipe 0.0457 mm (0.002 inch)
Stainless steel pipe 0.0254 mm (0.001 inch)
Galvanized Steel 0.13 mm (0.005 inch)
Plastic 0.015 mm (0.0006 inch)
Brass, Aluminum, Copper 0.03 mm (0.0012 inch)

2.2 Line Sizing Criteria

2.2.1 Sizing of liquid lines criteria
2.2.1.1 Velocity shall be kept low enough to prevent problem with erosion, water hammer, noise and
vibration. Recommended value of velocity and pressure drop is shown in table below :

Note :
1) Applicable to liquid to thermosiphon reboiler and liquid containing dissolved gas.
2) Provide a vertical run of 3 meters minimum from nozzle, at nozzle diameter,
before reducing the size of the line.
3) For non gravity flow lines, not pumped, use pump discharge criteria.
4) Maximum ρv² = 6,000 kg/m-s².

2.2.1.2 Control valve inlet lines shall be sized such that single phase liquid is maintained.

2.2.2 Sizing of gas lines criteria

2.2.2.1 Gas velocity should not exceed than 60 ft/s or noise may be a problem.
2.2.2.2 When pressure drop is a consideration, single phase gas lines should be sized on the basis of acceptable
pressure drop. Following are acceptable pressure drops for single phase gas process lines.
