steel pipes for suction and pumping and jointing

fittings:..

the utilized pipes are steel pipes with various diameters ,. The contractor
should supply the pipes and fittings on site in conformity with special
specifications of the mechanical works for the utilized steel and with the
thicknesses corresponding to maximum pressure and he should present
testing certificates of steel type utilized and the stresses allowed in such a
way that the selected thickness corresponds to maximum operating stresses .

the contractor should supply and install all required fittings such as screws ,
flanges and others to install steel assembly , disassembly joints , elbows and
Ts in proper and correct fashion in conformity with technical specifications

contained in catalogues and detailed information based on one of the
international technical standard specifications such as DIN or similar
standard . The contractor should submit the documents proofing the
conformity with mechanical and chemical conditions for the required steel
and the components should be painted with metal epoxy free from solvents
and resistive to chemical solutions .The paint should be performed in 3
coatings at least after surfaces are properly cleaned .
the pipes and joint fittings should be made from steel with stress
values at least as follows :
mechanical specifications :
 yielding strength σ y ≥ 2300 Kg /cm2
 breaking ( tensile ) strength σ t ≥ 3800 Kg /cm2
 relative elongation 26%
The pipes and joint fittings should be manufactured according to one of
the international technical standard specifications such as DIN or similar
standard . The contractor should submit the documents proofing the
conformity with the specifications .
The pipe ends are cut vertically and are flushed at an angle between 20-
25 ° and also the internal surface of joint should be flushed .
The allowed differences of joint measurements ( dimensions ) should
not exceed ± 5 mm in length or -1 mm for internal diameter
The pipes and joints should be aligned , cylindrically shaped and free
from projections , hillocks and thin laminates .
The pipes and fittings should be properly checked and inspected for
circularity and any deformed ends should be corrected with cleaning the
inside and outside of all pipes , valves and accessories from dust , dirt
and oils using a brush and compressed air before laying and installation
of pipes .
Immediately after cleaning , the pipe and accessory ends should be
plugged ( capped ) and transported on site where they will be used .
The contractor should pay attention to prevent the introduction of foreign
matter into the pipe and when this is occurred , the contractor shoulf
directly remove them on his cost .
The contractor should cut cleanly the pipes when required up to the
necessary length and flushing the ends based or the recommendations
using special type of joints
The follow up of cutting and flushing is necessary to correct the
circularity of pipes before jointing in conformity with the manufacturer
instructions

The steel pipes can be cut either with mechanical equipment , Estelline
cutting equipment or any other approved method . The outer sheath
should be removed for 150 mm in both ends before cutting .
The pipes should be aligned ( arranged ) on the longitudinal axis in such
a way that their ends is aligned with the circle perimeter and a 15 cm gap
between them is left .
After installing each pipe its dimensions should be inspected according
to the following table which shows the allowed dimensional
discrepancies .
Term ( description) Discrepancy
Peripheral of each section ±6 mm
End of the cylindrical section ±2 mm
Section length ±6 mm
Straightness of central line ±6 mm

The installed pipe report is certified by the administration's engineer and

the supervisor .
-marking:
on the external surface of each installed pipe a marking is placed using
white oil paint as follows :

1- specifying water flowing direction using an arrow

2- pipe number : which is written between pipe ends with the mark [*]
and with wording written using white oil paint as follows :
UP or INVERT
The closely placed pipes should be compatible ( matched ) together , e.g.
°N-2 with °N- 1 & °N=2 with °N=3 and during this procedure the marks
UP & INVERT of the first pipe should be aligned with those for the second
pipe
The longitudinal welding lines for pipes should be perpendicular with each
other and form 45 degrees angle with the vertical axis established on the
pipe axis .

Welding :
the contractor should perform the welding works in a manufacturing
workshop according to the instructions of the supervisor engineer and the
contractor should observe the following :
 the welded metal should have mechanical specifications equal to the
original metal

 welding method :
a- welding in the factory " workshop"
the welding in the workshop can be :
1- automatic welding
2- semi-automatic welding
3- manual ( hand ) welding
b– field welding : the welding in field is performed in hand
The welding electrodes utilized should have approved chemical
composition and in conformity with international specifications such as
DIN or any other similar international standard specification .
The welding employee ( workers ) should be qualified and well trained
people and have certificates insuring that they got the required grades in
professional practical tests .
 testing :
 all crossing points between longitudinal and transverse joints should
be obligatory tested using nondestructive tests .
the nondestructive test consists of :
 25% of ultrasound ( or X-ray ) for longitudinally welded joints
 15% of ultrasound ( or X-ray ) for transversely welded joints
 Insuring 100% of joints within the concrete supporting blocks before
concrete is placed .
The welding dimensions and tolerances are performed as shown in the
attached figure with the technical specifications submitted by the
contractor .

painting
surface cleaning :
internal and external surfaces of pipes should be cleaned using sand
blasting , where the average size of sand particles is about 0.35 mm2 and
the sand should be free from oils , greases , dust and impurities and the
projections should not exceed 0.1 mm

painting internal surfaces :

a – prime painting :
The internal surfaces are painted with zinc coating 40 microns thick
immediately after cleaning and the paint should have the following
proper properties :
 fast drying
 good friction strength

 good climatic conditions resistance in the polluted environments
 not dangerous when using gas flame cutting or welding
 it's not affected by surface burning when using gas flame cutting or
welding and also not affected with thermal treatment for stress
elimination
 high adhesion with steel surface
 good compatibility with most successive layers ( coatings )
b – finishing :
It's performed using epoxy valid for potable water and the thickness of
internal insulation as follows :
 4 coatings of epoxy each is 90 microns thick or 3 coatings of epoxy
each is 120 microns thick ( total thickness 360 microns )
 Total thickness 40 +360 =400 microns
 The finishing should be in conformity with standard AWWA-C210 or
epoxy mastic or any other international standard specifications
approved by administration
 Specifications
 resistive and high strength coating
 good strength for cathode protection
 high corrosion and wearing strength and high rigidity
 durable for the longest time possible
Insulation of external surfaces
The pipes are externally insulated using PE sheets which should have the
following basic technical specifications :
they should be in conformity with the standard BDS 15704 -83 for high
quality insulation including 3 layers of PE laminates at total thickness of
1.1 +0.3 mm and the properties of these laminated should be as follows :
 laminate ( sheet) thickness : not less than 0.3 +0.08 mm
 adhesive thickness : at least 0.1 mm
 tensile strength N/15 mm : 60

 Heating strength : at least 70 ° C
The standard DIN 30670 can be used for PE laminates or any other
