Introduction
A significant amountof testinghasbeencarriedout on the peat layer on site. The resultsof the
testing indicatethe material to be a highly variable materialwith shearstrengthsvarying Tom 3kFa in
the lower peat to 15kPaand greaterin the upper layers.
The peatthicknessat the top of the cut slopesvaries from 2.2m to 3m. Two casesare analysedfor
stability. Thesearea) the local stability of the peat at the top of the slopeandb) the global stability of
the peatuphill of the terminal.

Co-efficient of friction - p
ns
The groundwater is taken to be at ground level local to the wall for the design of the gabion retaining
structures. This is conservative as the pre-construction drainage to be installed within the peat layer
will reduce the groundwater levels within the upper more permeable surface layer. Also the high,
permeability of the gabions will lead to a reduction in the water-table in the peat local to the wall. The
gabions will be constrncted on a sloping surface that falls to the west. The face drains, counterfort
drains, will be brought up to the gabion retaining wall and will channel the water tiorn the peat, which
will fk~w in very smdl quantities down the back of the gabions, to the drain at the toe of the slope.
These are detailed in RPOM - Site Drainage Planning Report.
For local stability sufficient mass is provided in the gabion wall to give a FOS of 1.5 on sliding.
Overturning moments (FOS in excess of 1.5 achieved) and bearing pressure checks (FOS of 3) are all
satisfactory.
Global uphill stability of the peat is only a more onerous design condition than the local stability
design condition along the northeast comer of the cut slopes. Elsewhere the ground does not slope
directly towards the terminal. As a result there is a much reduced horizontal component acting
perpendicular to the gabion walls.

The sheetpiling equipmentwill accessthe site along a purposebuilt accesstrack running along the
retainededgeof the sheetpile. Soil stabilisationwill be carriedout along this accessroad andwithin
the peatbeing retainedby the sheetpile wall. This is achievedby the addition of dry powder cement
to the peat. The effect of the soil stabilisationis to stiffen the peatresulting in a material with
0 propertiessimilar to a firm to stiff clay.

The local stability of the sheetpiles underloading is satisfactoryin both the proppedandun-propped

without the requirementfor propping.Defectionsof the will be in’the orderof 18cmfor an un-

Introduction
It is necessaryto place fill on the excavatedsurfaceon the south-westernhalf of the Terminal to bring
levels back to 33.4m AOD. Theseanalysesexaminedthe global stability of the fill placedon the
terminal at the southof the site.
The face of the fill will be constructedas a geotextilewraparoundstructure. This will preventthe fill
material Gem applying any lateral load to the peat. This elementof the terminal till hasbeenmodelled
asa very stiff material with a friction angleof 90 degreesallowing it to standvertically. The size of
the areaof this reinforcedfill is 3m, the sameas that designedin Appendix 4D.

Groundwater Conditions
The inclusion of a more permeablelayer of rockfill at the baseof the fill material will limit the
groundwaterlevels within the fill asthe layer will abut the perimeterdrain. The water level in the
designis taken to be at the top of the more permeablerockfill layer.
The lowering of the watertable within the terminal to the undersideof the fill will also impact on the
water levels within the peat down hill of the terminal. The water table hashoweverbeen
conservativelymodelled as being at groundsurfaceon the retainedside of the sheetpile.
