37
Flow and Level
To monitor processes flow and level measurements are essential. For example, for gaining insight into the efficiency of
a system, it is necessary to know (among other aspects) what the input and the output are. But these measurements
are also necessary to monitor waste substances. Furthermore, there is a need to record the delivery and procurement
of raw materials to the entire business.
Equipment
Depending upon the principles on which flow and / or level measurement are based, there are various instruments
Flow and Level
For level detection, for example, a float switch may be used, also known as the Mobory switch. The operation of
this switch is based on the mutual repulsion of two magnets. The float is mounted on a pivoting shaft, on which a
permanent magnet also is mounted. The same magnet is mounted in the switching section, opposite the magnet
on the float. The poles of the two magnets are placed opposite each other in such a way that they repel each other
through the flange. GMS Instruments has a wide range in the area of flow and level measurements. Tell us what your
flow and / or level challenge is and we will do the rest.

VTR1010...1050 Turbine Flow Sensor
SIKA’s VTR turbine flow sensor allows you to determine precisely, dependably
and easily the flow rates of different liquids, such as water and other low
viscosity liquids, under the most severe conditions. The characteristic variable
is the K-factor (pulses per litre) which is specific to each measuring unit, is
determined by calibration and specified on the name plate. A five point
calibration report can be supplied on request.
The liquid flows into the measuring turbine and causes the rotor to move.
Due to the characteristic internal diameter, the speed of rotation is directly
proportional to the flow rate. The moving rotor blades are detected by the
pickup, and this is converted into a pulsed signal proportional to the flow rate.
The SIKA TU 7050 provides a failsafe mechanism as any malfunction of the flow
sensor would immediately trigger the low flow alarm setting. The set points
are very easily adjusted via the very visible, rotary dial settings and additional
oversight is offered by 2 LED lights. The red LED will light in a no-flow condition
and a green LED indicates flow.
SIKA’s VZ-S Positive displacement flow sensors are available with a variety
of casing and sealing materials, meaning they can be universally used for
different measurement media.

Instrument Valves & Temperature
The way pressure measuring instruments will be mount on top of the process depends on the situation and type of
process. All instrument valves and manifolds are designed to fulfil its unique purpose. For example, there can not
be any liquids go through a with a gas filled pipeline. While on the other side liquids are a necessity on liquid filled
processes. The reason for this is that there needs to be a fixed zero pressure point in the pipelines, to ensure reliable
and accurate measurements. There can be numerous reasons not to install an instrument valve directly to the process,
one of the reasons can be: a chemical composed process, high temperatures, or pressure fluctuations.
Manifolds ensure shutting-off impulse lines, deflating a process, and create a fixed zero pressure point. Manifolds
come in many different sizes and forms, all dependable on the needs and requirements for each unique process and
installation wishes.
Instrument Valves and Temperature
Valves fulfil a crucial function within the process. Valves make sure that significant amounts of fluences are treated in
controllable amounts by controlled opening and closing of the valve. The valve is the correcting system within the
process, what means that in combination with further process equipment, valves are a necessity for taking care and
maintaining the right amount of process going through.
A valve needs to have certain standards to keep a process running. Important features are for example the
characteristics and capacity of the valve. When there is a deviation in one of the components, for instance, the flow
of a process will be disrupted which can come with expensive downtime consequences. With the right features, a
controlled process can take place safely.

Cat Fines II
In general, marine diesel engines burn residual fuel oils. Some may contain higher levels of contaminants, such as water
and abrasive solids, than others. It is necessary to clean all residual fuel oils before injection into the engines to achieve
reliable and cost-effective operation.
The leading cleaning method used on board ships today is centrifugal separation. According to ISO 8217, the maximum
allowable content of catalytic fines is 60 ppm. Engine builders anticipate that the fuel cleaning system will reduce this to
a maximum of 10 - 15 ppm.
Catalytic fines are small particles of the spent catalyst after employing catalytic cracking processes. They are robust and
capable of severely scratching, if not cutting, metal. All catalytic fines that remain in the fuel oil after centrifugal separation
have the potential to cause abrasive wear and damage to the engine.
With the new Electronic Cat Fines II Test Kit, you are capable of determining the concentration of catalytic fines in fuel.
The affordable test is easy to perform, and the device displays the measured values directly in “ppm” with high accuracy.

Compatibility Tester
With the growing use of low sulphur fuels and increased frequency of bunkering, testing the stability of the fuel oil and
its compatibility for blending is becoming increasingly important.
While every fuel oil is manufactured to be stable - in that it does not have the tendency to produce asphaltenic sludge
- two stable fuel oils are not necessarily compatible when blended or mixed. A blend is regarded as being stable only if
it is homogeneous immediately after preparation, remains so in standard storage and at no time produces or tends to
produce sludge on a significant scale. If behaving in this way, the fuels forming the blend can be considered as compatible
with each other. Incompatibility is the tendency of residual fuel oil to produce a deposit on dilution or on blending with
other fuel oils, and typical incompatibility problems include sludging and blockage of bunker and service tanks, pipe
runs, filters and centrifuge bowls. In extreme circumstances, the only remedy is the manual removal of the sludge build
up, which is both time-consuming and extremely costly.
Onboard fuel oil compatibility testing is straightforward and can take just 20 minutes, providing engineers with crucial
information that can confirm that the fuel oil delivery will remain stable in the bunker tanks or identify possible stability
problems before blending and mixing two fuel oils. Compatibility fuel oil testing can prevent sludge build up, damage
or problems of fuel oil systems and ensure smooth engine operation by ruling out any issues with fuel combustion in
advance.
The Oil Compatibility Tester is easy to use and supplies essential information no marine engineer responsible for fuels
can live without. A small quick test will save you from the consequences of having an incompatible fuel mix in the tanks

MidFlow / HiFlow
VAF Instruments MidFlow®/
HiFlow® positive displacement
type liquid flow meters are used in
continuous metering applications,
in-line blending processes and batch
applications. MidFlow®/HiFlow® flow
meters have a simple, rugged design.
With only a few almost frictionless
moving internal parts there is hardly
any wear in the flow meter which
safeguards a typical long lasting
lifetime. MidFlow®/ HiFlow® meters
have no mechanical seals saving
you from regular maintenance and
possible leakage of process liquids
into the environment. The flow meter
is driven by the process liquid which
makes it suitable for distant locations
without power supply. The high
accuracy of the flowmeter (better
than 0,1% and repeatability 0,05%) is
not influenced by process pressure or
temperature, mechanical pipe strain
or fluid turbulence and therefore
straight inlet and outlet pipe pieces
are not required.

Test and Calibration Equipment
Pressure, temperature and other factors are important parameters in practical workplaces and in an industrial process.
This is why test calibration equipment plays an essential part in the monitoring and protection of processes and
environments. It also ensures that equipment functions perfectly on time, every time.
And it’s not just quality and process monitoring or indications for preventive maintenance that are at stake, but people’s
lives as well. To ensure that your equipment in functioning properly, it is essential that it is regularly tested and calibrated.
Various internationally recognised inspection bodies also require that critical measurement equipment is to be tested
and calibrated at regular intervals.
Equipment
Depending on the degree of accuracy required and the precise nature of the test or calibration, our technical advisors will
make the appropriate choice from our extensive range of test calibration equipment.
To test a pressure switch, for example, a hand pump with an analogue gauge is the most effective solution, whilst
the calibration of a temperature sensor on which the quality of your product depends may require a highly-accurate
temperature calibrator supported by PC-based processing of the measurement data. Tell us what your test calibration
equipment challenge is, and we will do the rest. We are specialised in the following product categories:
• Pressure gauges
• Temperature Calibrators
• Pressure calibrators
• Multimeters

P4 Pneumatic Hand Test Pump
Air is used as a pressure medium. Especially in application areas in which
wetting of the test sample is not allowed, or the use of aggressive or ionising
substances must be avoided, air is the ideal test medium. SIKA‘s pneumatic
test pump fulfils requirements that in many cases can only be covered by
several pumps from other suppliers. SIKA test pumps and pressure generators
are suitable for testing, adjusting and calibrating pressure sensors, pressure
gauges, pressure switches, safety valves and all types of pressure devices. They
are optimised in their function and use and assist in the performance of specific
tests and inspections.

D2 Digital Pressure Gauge
SIKA’s D2 digital pressure gauge is especially suitable for both stationary and
mobile measurement and display of pressure. The D2 can be used as reference
pressure gauges to simplify the checking, adjustment and calibration of other
pressure measurement devices directly on site.
Display
The large digital local display shows the measured pressure and indicates
the current status of the digital pressure gauge, even under poor lighting
conditions. This eliminates the difficult task of reading a dial gauge and
avoiding parallax errors. Needle jitter due to vibration or pressure fluctuations
is reduced. Display damping or averaging can be configured directly using
display filters. This ensures easy, tireless readout.
Linearisation
Multi-point adjustment can be performed if it is necessary to adjust the
indicated values at different test points. Two-point adjustment is available for
setting the zero point and slope of the measuring cell curve. Type P digital
pressure gauges allow up to six offset values to be programmed in order to shift
the characteristic curve to meet the most stringent customer expectations.
User-defined characteristics
Measurement is often based on ideal linear characteristics. In normal practice,
sensors, transmitters, transducers, etc., are often subject to non-linear
characteristics due to various offset, gradient, linearity or hysteresis errors. For
the faultless measurement or generation of such non-linear characteristics,
the measuring e.g. can be configured with up to ten points by the user.

Test Tubes
The combination of KWIK-
DRAW™ detector tubes and
pumps offers a quick yet
precise measuring system to
detect hazardous gases and
vapours. The filling material
in detector tubes is calibrated
and adjusted to the required
test gas and will change
colour if this gas is present. The
length of this discolouration
indicates the concentration of
the hazardous gas or vapour
and can be measured by a
printed scale on most of the
tubes.
Gas Detection
Test Tubes
Over 200 various Uniphos Gas
Detection Tubes are available
to make spot measurements
for over 500 gases and
vapours correctly. The short-
term Uniphos Gas Detection
Tubes are employed with
the ASP-40 Air Sampling
Pump. A large number of
different gases and vapours
can be measured by the
short Uniphos Gas Detection
Tubes. Those tubes are used,
e.g. for the determination
of concentration peaks, the
measurement of exposures
in the inhalation area, the
determination of possible
leakages as well as for the
analysis of the air in sewers,
shafts, tanks or other confined
spaces.

Thermal Imaging
Thermal imaging is the use of an infrared imaging and measurement camera to “see” and “measure” thermal energy
emitted from an object. Infrared allows us to see what our eyes cannot. Infrared thermography cameras produce images
of invisible infrared or “heat” radiation and provide precise non-contact temperature measurement capabilities. Nearly
everything gets hot before it fails, making infrared cameras extremely cost-effective, valuable diagnostic tools in many
diverse applications. And as the industry strives to improve product quality, and enhance worker safety, new applications
for infrared cameras continually emerge. The latest application is “night time” navigation. GMS Instruments has a complete
product range of thermal imaging cameras for night time navigation, Anti-Piracy, iceberg navigation, oil spill detection,
safety onboard and man-overboard situations for maritime applications.
