AUC powder is free flowing and used as such. Some U3O8 added to control
density and pore distribution

IDR powder –briquetting – fracturing -- sieving – granules – use of dry


lubricant

ADU powder slurried in a solvent and a volatile binder (PEG or PVA) ---
spray dried and sieved to size –pore former added –binder removal step is
added

Density of green pellets 50 - 60 of TD


150-500 MPa reciprocal or rotary presses
Dished ends and chamfered edges of pellets
Sintering

Dewaxing Binders, lubricants or pore formers (if used)


Removed at 600-800oC for several hours

Sintering at 1600-1800oC, 3-10 hours (reducing atmosphere)

Grain sizes 10-20 mm

Porosity 1-2 mm

Density 95 – 97 % TD for LWR fuel (UO2 or MOX)


85-95 % TD for FBR MOX

Finishing Diameter accurate at 10 mm
