INTRODUCTION

Geotechnics is the branch of Engineering that deals with the study of the interaction
of buildings with the land. It is therefore a discipline not only of Civil Engineering, but also
of other activities, such as Architecture and Mining Engineering, which are directly related
to the terrain.

Geotechnics covers the fields of soil mechanics and rock mechanics, and many
aspects of geology, geophysics, hydrology and other related sciences. Geotechnics is
practiced by engineering geologists and geotechnical engineers.

Part of the applied geology that studies the composition and properties of the most
superficial area of the earth's crust, for the seat of all kinds of constructions and public
works

2
GEOTECHNY

It is the application of scientific methods and engineering principles for the

acquisition, interpretation and use of knowledge of the materials of the earth's crust and
earth materials for the solution of engineering problems and the design of engineering
works. It is the applied science of predicting the behavior of the Earth, its various materials
and processes to make the Earth more suitable for human activities and development.

EXAMPLES OF THE GEOTECHNICAL APPLICATION INCLUDE

• The prediction, prevention or mitigation of damage caused by natural hazards

such as avalanches, mudflows, landslides, rockfalls, sinkholes and volcanic
eruptions.

• The application of the mechanics of soils, rocks and groundwater for the design and
expected performance of earth structures, such as dams

4
• The prediction of design and performance of the foundations of bridges, buildings
and other artificial structures in terms of the underlying soil and / or rock, flood
control and prediction

GEOTECHNICAL APPLIED TO SUPERFICIAL MINING

1. Importance of the Geomechanical Characterization of the Rocky Massif (Geology,

structural geology, Intact Rock, Rocky Massif and Rock Geomechanical Classification
Systems).
2. Characteristics and concepts of stresses and deformation characteristics.
3. General Seismicity and its impact on geotechnics.
4. Hydrogeology and geotechnics; importance of the recognition of groundwater levels and
their difference with piezometric levels, concept of permeability, importance of elementary
representative volume, hydromechanical coupling and principle of effective efforts.
5. General Concepts of Instability, elasticity and plasticity.
6. Main constitutive equations in mining geomechanics (Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek &
Brown).

STABILITY OF SUPERFICIAL EXCAVATIONS

1. Definition of slopes, pits and cuts.

2. Stereographic projection and identification of failure mechanisms on slopes (Fault, Flat,
Block, Circular, Landslides).
3. Combined faults and safety factors.
4. Numerical modeling of slopes and pits (continuous medium, discontinuous medium and
influence of groundwater).
5. Sizing, selection of support systems and projection of excavations in drawings

CONCLUSIONS

 For the study area a geotechnical description of the most frequent landslides is
carried out.
 The parameters of resistance (cohesion and friction) for the different lithologies
have been obtained as a result of a bibliographic review.
