REFLECTION Water and religion have a long and enduring relationship. Water is a symbol
shared by every religion. It cleanses, purifies and sanctifies in ceremonies around the world.
It’s no surprise religions have come to honour water. Without it, life cannot survive. Central to
our rituals and traditions, water blesses, purifies and redeems. water is important - for
Christians It is through water that we are baptized and welcomed into the Christian community,
whether it’s a little sprinkle on the forehead or a dunk in the river. Water is symbolic of our
relationship with God, carrying the image of renewal, promise, and hope. Water is essential to
all life, connects us with the rest of Creation, and is a gift from God.
