Government or Utility Company

Over 50% Reduction of Electric Power Consumption

Environment
Reduction of CO2 and Refrigerant Emissions by 40 to 70%

19
District Cooling
Benefits For Developers

 Reduced construction cost by more than 8%

 Reduced Electric Power Infrastructure cost by more than 30% where applicable

 Reduced Electric Utility Connection Fee

 Elimination of A/C plant will free space for commercial utilization

 District Cooling is viewed as a high end service that will add to the property value

 Better building aesthetics due to removal of bulky outdoor equipment

22
District Cooling
Benefits For Tenants

 Individual space or room temperature control by using multiple indoor FCU’s

 Lower indoor humidity due to better chilled water temperature control

 Chillers are in an enclosed remote location resulting in lower noise in occupied areas

 Less maintenance disturbance; this gives a higher level of tenant privacy and security

23
District Cooling
System Reliability

 Industrial grade equipment is used with much lower failure frequency than
commercial equipment

 A standby chiller and pumps are always added in a Central Plant Room

 Central Plant Rooms often have round the clock maintenance and operation
staff. This allows proper preventive maintenance and quicker response time
in the event of failure

 Thermal Storage Tank allows for 6 to 8 hours of cold water supply in case of
emergency

 Over 99% Efficiency

24
District Cooling
Better for the Environment

 Improved efficiency reduces electric power (by more than 45%) and
consequently CO2 emission

 Central plant room uses ozone friendly refrigerants such as HFC-134a

& HFO

 Fewer Larger reliable Industrial Equipment means less consumables usage

(oil, compressors etc.…) compared to hundreds of small less reliable
commercial equipment

25
District Cooling
Thermal Energy Storage Benefits

Incorporating Thermal Energy Storage tanks by

operating the chillers during off peak hours and
storing that chilled water in large thermal
energy storage tank, shifting the power required
to run the chilling system to off-peak times,
when power is in less demand. This reduces
capital cost by 8% and operating cost by 12%.

Thermal Storage Tank

District Cooling
Energy Efficiency

 Large industrial grade equipment are more energy efficient than commercial
equipment; a 100 Ton commercial Air Cooled Reciprocating Chiller requires
around 1.7 KW/Ton at design conditions as compared to a 2,500 Ton Industrial
Centrifugal Chiller that requires less than 0.7 KW/Ton at the same conditions.

 Possibility of using other energy sources such as natural gas for Tri-Generation.
Gas Engines have an average year round 36% heat utilization efficiency without
heat recovery and over 65% with heat recovery as compared to 24% heat
utilization for power generation equipment only as published by Typical GCC
Power Plants.

27
We Still Need More…

Tri-Generation
The Future Of District Cooling

28
Tri-Generation
What Is It?
Tri-generation or combined cooling, heating & power (CCHP) is the
simultaneous generation of electricity while recovering heat from exhaust or
jacket of a generator or turbine or fuel cell to use it for heating , hot water or
convert it into cooling energy via adsorption chillers.
Tri-generation typically utilize natural gas as a fuel but can also use Diesel fuel,
bio diesel, bio methane or ethanol.
Its main purpose is to utilize the waste heat and increase efficiencies from
around 40% to over 80% and hence reduce primary energy use which saves
money and the environment.
Tri-generation work best when it is located close to medium or high density
development requiring both cooling and heating.
Successful implementations in Abu Dhabi & KSA are encouraging success
stories for further development.

Tri-Generation
Barriers & Opportunities
Independent power producers need licensing and has to pass via RSB to supply
the grid.
Tri-Generation used for cooling plant only may need regulatory approval .
Natural Gas is imported from Abu Dhabi and Qatar via pipeline and LNG is
imported by DUSUB through Jebel Ali floating terminal and used for peaking
summer demand .
Natural Gas is not supplied yet distributed in Dubai by DUSUB except for DEWA
& Dubal and plans to extend distribution are not yet clear.
The World Islands are not supplied by power from the grid and are ideal
candidates for tri-generation.
DC Tri-Generation Plant operating on NG could save 65% of the precious,
imported and expensive summer Natural Gas.
Tri-Generation
Key Equipment
Advancement in Technology
• New High Efficiency Gas Generators from Kawasaki, Wartsila with 46 to 49% efficiency
(LHV).

• New Triple Effect Absorption Chillers from Thermax, Hitachi & Kawasaki with COP of 1.75 to
1.8 offering 25% higher cooling capacity output compared to double effect absorption
chillers. The Triple effect is making tri-generation and heat recovery conversion to cooling
more feasible than ever before.

• Electric Centrifugal Chillers with high COP > 6.0 and variable speed drives is making
District Cooling more feasible than ever before.

• New HFO Refrigerant offering good performance and promise to reduce global warming
potential.

• Stratified Chilled Water Thermal Energy Storage Tank is the most efficient and economically
viable energy storage available to mankind.
