SmokeStop™ D100 Deployable Smoke

& Draft Curtains
Description
SMC Coopers deployable smoke & draft curtains are like a large electrically operated roller blind.
Whereby they are concealed above a ceiling out of view. The curtains are either activated by an
alarm signal or by a power outage. The fabric is fire resistant, but the system as a whole is not
meant to stop fire; it instead impedes or channels out the smoke.

The SMC Coopers SmokeStop ™ D100 is manufactured from the same materials that has been
tested and certified for a 3-Hour fire label and smoke and draft rating, approved to span unlimited
widths and heights up to 9m. The test criteria for fire rated assemblies included side guides,
however the design parameters for deployable smoke & draft curtains do not require any of the
above certifications except the ability to impede the spread of smoke and therefore side guides are
not required for the D100 Deployable Smoke Draft Curtains . Thus, the D100 Smoke Draft Curtain
exceeds the fire and life safety requirements of the building code.

Deployment Options

12
Product Application
A Smoke Draft Curtain is commonly used in large spaces where smoke management is a challenge.
In these type of applications, Smoke Draft Curtains typically work in conjunction with smoke and
heat vents. Above smoke movement provides temporary tenable environments until building
occupants can evacuate during a fire or emergency. Smoke Draft Curtains are a critical part of the
compartmentalization effort because they prevent the migration of smoke and help to channel it
towards vents that are a passive system for smoke management.

Product Advantages
SMC Coopers SmokeStop™ D100 are made of technologically advanced fire-resistant fabric. The
assembly is concealed in a compact overhead housing and is virtually invisible when retracted.
Operated by remotely located control unit and fully synchronized with the building fire and life
safety system. Upon activation the assembly gravity drops into place and is automatically reset after
clearing of the fire alarm or smoke detection system.

FireMaster® evacU8® D200E Fire &
Smoke Rated Curtain With Egress:
Description
The SMC Coopers FireMaster® evacU8® D200E is a fire and smoke rated curtain with soft surface
egress doors. The SMC Coopers FireMaster® evacU8® D200E is a first in the industry, made of a
flexible fire-resistant fabric that has been US laboratory tested and approved for up to widths up
to18m, heights up to 6m. It has a UL 10B/C rating for 20 minutes, and UL 10D for 90 minutes and
is also UL 1784 Smoke & Draft rated.

The SMC Coopers FireMaster® evacU8® D200E incorporates a new concept in egress doors, the
soft-surface egress door can be pushed open with less than 30 pounds of force applied to the
interior surface, once opened a building occupant can easily pass through for egress. This swinging
technology also allows the soft-surface egress door to automatically return to its fully closed fire
and life safety position.

ADA Compliant

Product Application
The SMC Coopers FireMaster® evacU8® D200E, shown above depicts a single fire and smoke rated
assembly which can incorporate egress doors. The D200E when deployed is fixed in vertical high
pressure side guides that are easily hidden by side mounting. This technology guarantees no blowout
or movement problems that are a potential challenge with combustion during a fire. Because D200E
will not blowout from vertical shaft air pressures that are common in multistory buildings, these
assemblies are easily tested under normal building conditions.

18
Product Advantages
The assembly is concealed in a compact overhead housing and is virtually invisible when in the
retracted position. Operated by a remotely located control unit and fully synchronized with
the building fire and life safety system, The FireMaster ® evacU8® D200E uses the same self-

Smoke Barriers:
Description
Smoke Barriers are like a large electrically operated roller blind. Whereby they are concealed above
a ceiling out of view. The barriers are either activated by an alarm signal or by a power outage. The
fabric is fire resistant, but the system as a whole is not meant to stop fire; it instead Impedes or

Deployment Options

21
Product Application
Smoke and heat exhausted ventilation systems (SHEVS) create a smoke free layer above the floor
by removing smoke and heat, and thus improve the conditions for the safe escape and/or rescue of
people and animals and the protection of property and permit the fire to be fought while still in its
early stages.

Smoke barriers control the movement of fire effluent within a construction works in the event of
fire. Smoke barriers, when used within a smoke and heat control system, becomes a critical element
of that system if smoke barriers are not in their fire operational position, the system will not perform
as designed. However, even in the event that other elements of the SHEVS do not function smoke
barriers in the fire operational position will provide essential smoke containment and channelling.

Product Advantages
Smoke Barriers are made of technologically advanced fire-resistant fabric. The assembly is
concealed in a compact overhead housing and is virtually invisible when retracted.

Operated by remotely located control unit and fully synchronized with the building fire and life
safety system. Upon activation the assembly gravity drops into place and is automatically reset after

FireMaster® Active Fire Curtain Barriers:
Description
SMC Coopers FireMaster® Active Fire Curtain Barriers are like a large electrically operated roller
blind. Whereby they are concealed above a ceiling out of view. The curtains are either activated by
an alarm signal or by a power outage. The Fire Curtain Barriers are always installed with side guides
to stop the propagation of fire & smoke from one area to another.

Active Fire Curtain Barriers comprise technologically advanced fire-resistant fabric roller barriers
encased in a compact steel housing. Barriers remain invisibly retracted until activated by an alarm
or detector signal, at which time they descend safely to their operational position. To be regulation
compliant, they must be protected by total power failure Gravity Fail-Safe. The fire curtain is
mounted as a vertical rolling assembly with fixed side guides to ensure against movement or
blowout during extreme pressures caused by fire conditions.

120min or 240min rating of a Fire Curtain is actually for the complete systems ability to stop the
flames and not let the fire pass that barriers location.

Product Application
SMC Coopers FireMaster® Fire Curtain Barriers are used in life safety and property protection
application and can be horizontal, vertical or angled. For example, in certain end-use applications,
these could be used in place of fire doors and roller shutters, non-loadbearing walls, non-loadbearing
ceilings and glazed elements. They can be used to form fire separation, such as protected routes and
protected lobbies. Active fire curtain barrier assemblies can enable greater barrier widths and barrier
movements using less space than other traditional methods.

In case of a fire, to ensure safe passage of people, a Fire Curtain Barrier can be used to contain
smoke for a predetermined time before closing fully for full fire containment, thanks to the Split Drop
Delay, allowing evacuees to escape underneath it. As an additional safety precaution, one can install
an emergency retract button, which when pressed, would pull the curtain upwards and after safely
passing through, the curtain would automatically descend.

29
Product Advantages
When compared to the other fire solutions is that the assembly is concealed in a compact overhead
housing and is virtually invisible when in the retracted position. It is operated by a remotely located
control unit and fully synchronized with the building fire and life safety system. Upon activation the
assembly gravity drops into place and is automatically reset after clearing of the fire alarm or smoke
detection system.

FireMaster® Horizontal Active Fire
Curtain Barriers:
Description
SMC Coopers FireMaster® Horizontal Active Curtain Barriers comprise technologically advanced
fire-resistant fabric roller barriers encased in a compact steel housing. Curtains remain invisibly
retracted until activated by an alarm or detector signal. At this time they close safely to their
operational position where they stop and control the spread of fire in a building.

Product Application
The FireMaster® Horizontal Active Curtain Barrier is suitable for large and small openings such as
expansive atriums or it can be used in skylight applications.

Product Advantages
When compared to the other fire solutions is that the assembly is concealed in a compact housing
and is virtually invisible when in the retracted position. It is operated by a remotely located control
unit and fully synchronized with the building fire and life safety system. FireMaster® Horizontal
Active Fire Curtain Barriers use NVS™ technology (no visible supports) within the opening. Thereby
the opening is completely free and clear of any auxiliary slide cables. This is of particular benefit for
building service and maintenance purpose as access equipment can be used through the openings.

FireMaster® Concertina™ Active
Fire Curtain Barriers:
Description
SMC Coopers FireMaster® Concertina™ Active Fire Curtain Barriers protects WITHOUT the need for
CORNER POSTS giving architects, consultants and specifiers a whole new way to approach buildings
design. SMC Coopers FireMaster® Concertina™ Active Fire Curtain Barriers provides both 60min
and 180min protection as a revolution in active fire separation. With delayed and/or split drop
deployment, the control system offers safe escape as well as controlled ‘gravity fail-safe’ and auto
retract. This enables easy integration with a dedicated fire alarm system or building management
suite.

Fire Curtain technology is safe and as standard incorporates a ‘total’ fail-safe by gravity system
in the event of total mains, wiring and/or system corruption. Installing a large SMC Coopers
FireMaster® Concertina™ Active Fire Curtain Barriers to replace a non-loadbearing wall opens up
exciting design possibilities for architects and construction engineers. Fire curtains are designed to
activate upon receipt of a signal from either a fire alarm system or locally positioned detector.

Product Application
Design can include the use of escalator and stairwell protection. SMC Coopers FireMaster®
Concertina™ Active Fire Curtain Barriers provide an effective alternative to non-loadbearing fire
walls, or traditional rolling fire shutters and/or fire curtain barriers that are required to terminate
into corner posts of columns, and are used extensively as part of the fire engineered solution in
commercial and industrial applications such as airports, shopping centers, and offices etc, where the
need for maintaining open areas for access is vital.

37
Product Advantages
SMC Coopers FireMaster® Concertina™ Active Fire Curtain Barriers does not require any visible
support posts at the corners. Have unlimited spans and drops of 8m* with a small lightweight
housing.
Can be installed as a polygon, triangle, ‘L’ shaped right angles, curves, ‘Z’ shapes or even in a
complete circle. Act as a fire separating element within the building design to prevent the passage of
fire for a predetermined period of time.

Case Studies:
GREATER LONDON AUTHORITY - GLA BUILDING - LONDON - UK

This new and striking piece of modern architecture, which sits opposite the Tower of London, and
next to Tower Bridge, houses the Mayor of London and his assembly. It provides 17,000 square
metres of accommodation on ten levels. Its glass enclosure invites the public to watch the assembly
at work. The top floor is available for exhibitions or functions for up to 200 people.

The building’s unique, offset spherical design has a built in environmentally sustainable energy
system, which reduces the running costs to 25% of what they would have been using traditional
methods. The cutting edge design also incorporates a natural ventilation system.

Much of the interior is open plan, which necessitated the inclusion of Coopers Fire Barriers at high
level to separate the auditorium from the walkways. The barriers are fitted with voice warning
systems and “split drop”delays, ensuring that upon initiation, the barrier will provide the essential
smoke containment, followed by full fire containment. Coopers also designed and fitted “Bomb
Blast” Barriers in the mail room, separating it from the car park.

43
ROYAL EXCHANGE - LONDON - UK

A landmark site in the City of London, the Royal Exchange is a feat of architecture, which stands
proudly alongside the Bank of England, Mansion House and The Stock Exchange. The third and
current Exchange was designed by Sir William Tite and was originally conceived as a meeting place
for city merchants. It is open to the public on most days.

The building has been twice destroyed by fire, but on both occasions it was re-built on the same
site. The current Royal Exchange was opened by Queen Victoria on January 1st 1845 and cost no
less than £150,000!

As part of a major refurbishment,Coopers designed and installed a series of concealed Fire Barriers
to the ground floor shop fronts, which provide fire and smoke containment in the event of a fire
within a shop. As there is only one point of entry and escape from the shops, all barriers are fitted
with voice warning systems and “split drop”delays. All barriers also have high visibility signage and
emergency retract facilities.

Due to the unique design and application,Coopers worked closely with architects Fitzroy Robinson
& Partners, to satisfy the high level of scrutiny, approvals and testing that are required by the local
authorities.

44
SWISS RE BUILDING - LONDON - UK

Towering majestically above the London skyline, the Swiss Re Building is set to become one of the
capitals most prestigious landmarks. Designed by the eminent architect Lord Foster, and built by
Skanska the Swedish construction company, it will house retail outlets as well as offices,to serve the
local working community.

The aerodynamic form of the building aids the unique natural ventilation system,by minimising
wind loads on the structure, such that wind is not deflected to ground level, where it would cause
discomfort to pedestrians.

Coopers engineers worked closely with Arup Fire Consultancy to design and install over a kilometre
of smoke containment system for numerous floor levels within the thirty nine storey glass tower.
The unique design of the building necessitated a stringent and highly detailed performance
specification to be produced and adhered to. Coopers were chosen for this important project
because of their track record in providing innovative solutions that suit the requirements of modern
building designs and materials.

PRINCESS NORA UNIVERSITY

A vision of King Abdullah Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to advance
education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Princess Nora Bint AbdulRahman University is now a
reality. The 800-ha 3-million msq built up area campus, the largest woman-only university in the
world, was inaugurated by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques on 12th of jumada’II, 1432 H
(May 15th, 2011), exactly two years and two months from the date construction contracts were
signed in February 2009.

A substantial site team oversaw implementation directing contractors working on multi-tracks

of different construction phases and dosely supervising work progress. During the months of
construction 75,000 workers, over 225 cranes and in excess of 5,000 construction equipment
worked around the clock to beat the set 25-months construction.

SMC Coopers life safety products have been selected jointly by Dar Al Handasah & Areen Design
Services to be integrating into the PNU Mega Project. SMC Coopers smoke curtains has participated
in achieving the designer life safety evacuation plans.

SMC Coopers Fire & smoke curtains are retracted into a concealed housing in the ceiling and is only
deployed in a fire situation or for testing purposes.
SMC Coopers smoke curtains has been installed as a life safety products in the below locations to
stop the rapid spread of smoke into the buildings, assist occupants with safe evacuation, & assist
emergency service in case of fire:

1. Kitchens: to control the smoke between the kitchens areas & common /classes’ areas.
2. Atriums: to stop the smoke from travelling between different levels of the building.

All the smoke Containment Systems were fully installed, tested, and commissioned by SMC interiors
Saudi – Arabia Fire Specialists.

HARAMAIN HIGH SPEED RAIL PROJECT

The Haramain High Speed Rail project also known as the “Western Railway” or “Mecca-Medina high
speed railway”, is a 449.2 kilometres (279.1 mi) high speed inter-city rail transport system under
construction in Saudi Arabia.[1] It will link the Muslim holy cities of Medina and Mecca via King
Abdullah Economic City, Rabigh, Jeddah, and King Abdulaziz International Airport. It will connect with
the national network at Jeddah.

The rail line is planned to provide a safe and comfortable transport in 320 kilometres per hour
(200 mph) electric trains. Construction started in March 2009. The railway is expected to carry
three million passengers a year, including many Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, helping to relieve traffic
congestion on the roads. The double-track line will be electrified and the design speed is 360
kilometres per hour (220 mph).

The total contract value is EUR 6.736 billion (approximately US$9.4 billion).

SMC Coopers specialists in fire and smoke containment were commissioned to produce a custom
designed barrier system to prevent smoke dispersion into the station. The smoke curtains, which
were installed by SMC interiors Saudi Arabia were specifically designed to protect the means of
escape for customers, whilst at the same time dramatically reduce the transmission throughout the
building of life threatening effluent generated by a fire.

SMC Coopers with its unique links with authorities governing fire legislation, such as BSi, has
developed an unprecedented track record for providing highly effective barrier systems for multi-
national companies at prime locations worldwide.

All the smoke Containment Systems were fully installed, tested, and commissioned by SMC interiors
Saudi – Arabia Fire Specialists.
