OTOPod® M2 – Setting up and Testing the Symphony/Compass Interface
I. INTRODUCTION
The OTOPod M2 can be used as both an audiometer as well as a hearing instrument programmer.
Currently, the OTOPod M2 is designed to program ISP and Dual ISP hearing aids made by Widex, although other
models are being tested. This document provides instructions for configuring the interface between the
Symphony NOAH Module and Compass so that Compass can detect and program hearing aids through the
OTOPod M2 audiometer. For further information about Symphony or Compass, please consult their respective
user guides.
Prerequisites
The following prerequisites must be met in order for the OTOPod M2 to be able communicate with
Compass:
Note: Audiograms created in prior versions of Symphony NOAH Module will not display in Compass.
Install the Symphony NOAH Module and OTONet Adapter as instructed by the OTOPod Installation
Guide, which was provided to you along with the OTOPod M2.
Beginning with the release of Symphony 1.3 and Compass 5.2 (October 2010), there is no
longer a need to install the OTONet software utility, so if you have these versions installed , please
now skip to section III.
Widex provides the OTONet Utility – which is included with Compass materials – to configure the
interface between the OTONet adapter and Compass. The OTONet Utility performs the following functions:
2
OTOPod® M2 – Setting up and Testing the Symphony/Compass Interface
It automatically detects the COM port assigned to the OTONet adapter and OTOPod
It automatically updates the Windows Registry, which allows Compass to detect and communicate with
the OTOPod
It can also be used as a diagnostic tool for certain types of troubleshooting
The OTONet Utility must be run after the Compass installation, but prior to using the OTOPod M2 with
Compass. There is no need to use the utility after the system has been configured, unless:
1. Launch the OTONet Utility provided with Compass. The Setup - OTONet Software Setup Wizard dialog box
is displayed:

7. Click on the Install button to begin the installation. The Setup Wizard will then begin extracting files. When
the installation is complete, the Completing the OTONet Software Setup Wizard dialog is displayed. Click the
Finish button to exit the Setup Wizard.
Note: Before starting the OTONet Utility, please ensure that your OTONet adapter is plugged into a
USB port on your PC and that your OTOPod is turned on and paired to the OTONet adapter. Symphony NOAH
Module and Compass software must already be installed on your computer before running the utility. Insert
the OTONet adapter into a USB port only after installing Symphony or the OTONet Utility.
The OTOPod and OTONet adapter are paired when shipped; if, however, you have received a new
OTONet adapter or OTOPod, please pair the devices using the Symphony NOAH Module’s Device Manager
prior to running the utility.
Launch the OTONet Utility by either (1) double-clicking on the OTONet Utility desktop icon, if you
created that shortcut during installation, or (2) selecting the utility via the Windows Start menu. To access the
OTONet Utility via your Windows Start Menu:
Click the Windows Start button at the bottom left of your screen
Click on “All Programs”, to display the Windows Start Menu
Click on “Otovation”, to display the Otovation Menu
Click on “OTONet”, to display the OTONet Utility Menu
Click on “OTONet” , to launch the utility

OTOPod® M2 – Setting up and Testing the Symphony/Compass Interface
After launching the utility, the OTONet Utility will present a small window, displaying the COM port
number and OTOPod Serial number, as shown in this example below (your COM port number can be different):
After the utility displays the COM port number, you can close the utility by selecting Exit from the File
menu (File → Exit).
Once you have run the OTONet Utility and detected the COM port number, Compass is ready to
program hearing aids via your OTOPod M2.
First, launch the Symphony NOAH Module for a patient. Then, connect your OTOPod. At this point, you
can either create a new audiogram or use the most recent audiogram for programming the hearing aid. When
you are ready to program the hearing aid via Compass, click the Detach button, shown below, which releases
the OTOPod and corresponding COM port from Symphony, making them both available to Compass.
Note: The Detach button displays in Symphony only when an OTOPod with a serial number greater
than or equal to “0900” (e.g., OPOD-09XX-XXXX) is connected. Any user who inadvertently clicks on the
Detach button can re-connect the device by clicking the Connect button.
