Brainstorming with a Chart

For this assignment, you will practice brainstorming and setting up essays and research

papers with charts. In this assignment you will be using a tree chart. Here is an example of a tree

chart and the set up for this assignment.

1. The Prompt will be given to you.

2. You will write your own Thesis Statement.

3. You will write three Arguments to support your thesis statement with each one pertaining

to one primary source and two secondary sources.

4. For each of the arguments, use one given source to support your argument.

5. With each source, cite it in MLA format (the format will be given to you) as you would

in a works cited page.


This assignment is to practice using sources for essays/research papers and creating your own

thesis statements and arguments for prompts. As well as differentiating between primary and

secondary sources for each of the arguments (be sure to use one source per argument). This will

also give you the practice of creating citations for sources as you would for a works cited page.

• You will be using Gliffy to create your tree chart, https://www.gliffy.com/ , and have

your parents help you make an account.

• Next copy and paste the given prompt into the first top square

• Write your thesis statement in the second square.

• The next line of squares are three arguments you create to support your thesis

statement.

• The next line are quotations from each of the sources to support your argument. Be

sure to only use one source per argument.

• The last line are citations of the sources. Be sure to cite them as you would for a

works cited page.

This will be due in class with two hard copies, one for myself to grade and one for you to keep in

class.

Thesis Statement
