Our project is the development of training modules rooted in Motivational Interviewing. The

goal of our program is to investigate the impact of these training modules including Health At Every Size

and non-diet approaches on Keene State College (KSC) dietetic interns. The Keene State College Dietetic

Internship (KSC DI) staff and coaching and research interns will be responsible for the development and

implementation of training modules funded by this grant program.

With new found freedom, busy schedules and often unlimited access to dining hall offerings,

many college students do not have healthful eating at the back of their minds. The Journal of Affective

Disorders estimates that clinical eating disorders affect ten to twenty percent of female university

students and four to ten percent of male university students. College counseling/coaching services and

student wellness centers take an important role in education, resources and support.

The projects first objective will be the design of the training modules for use by dietetic interns

and will be achieved by fall 2018. The second objective is to investigate the effects of the training

modules on the interns’ ability to effectively provide nutrition coaching to clients. The clients will be KSC

students and faculty/staff who sign up and actively participate in the nutrition coaching program and

will be achieved by fall 2019. Internship staff will measure the dietetic interns’ effectiveness to provide

nutrition coaching by following up with clients 6 months and 2 years after coaching has ended. We will

contact clients and have them complete a questionnaire that will evaluate their experience maintaining

the healthy lifestyle changes that they implemented while participating in the nutrition coaching.

Additionally, dietetic interns will complete a questionnaire regarding how effective they felt the training

modules were and how they can be improved for future use. The KSC DI Assistant Director, Whitney

Hightower, a registered and licensed dietitian nutritionist will be overseeing the development,

implementation and evaluation of the training modules.

How will you use the money: 500 characters

The budget includes the cost of developing training modules for nutrition counseling focused on

motivational interviewing and the non-diet approach. This will cover the hosting fee request in order to

host our training modules. By creating online training modules, incoming Keene State College dietetic

interns will have the ability to complete required nutrition counseling training anywhere before

beginning their internship.
