CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background information


Joaquin Rodrigo (22 November 1901 – 6 July 1999) was a Spanish
composer and pianist. His music is the most popular of the twentieth century. He wrote
many instruments pieces and his classical guitar pieces are recognized as the most
popular. He is known for such classical guitar pieces as Concierto de Aranjuez.
He was blinded when he was three years old from diphtheria. His
blindness did not influence to his career. He began studied piano and violin from the
age of eight. He started composing in 1923 and he wrote his first composition for
piano in 1923.
Invocacion y Danza is one of masterpieces for guitar solo and was
dedicated to Spanish composer, Manuel de Falla and Venezuelan guitarist, Alirio Díaz.
It was written in 1961 and Alirio Díaz premiered at the Château de la Brède in 1962.
Invocacion y Danza was published first edition in 1962 by the French house Editions
de France by Graciano Tarrago. The second edition was published in 1973 by Alirio
Diaz. In 1993 Spanish guitarist Pepe Romero edited to his own edition as an
alternative edition and he solved some errors found in 1997.
Although his pieces were written for classical guitar, he never plays the
guitar, he wrote this piece at the piano. However, he knows well how to use the guitar
for composition. Invocacion y Danza was edited in many times. Each edition was
edited in different style. For this reason it is significant to understand differences of
each edition and structure of this piece. It would be useful to performance and
teaching in advanced level.
Therefore, this study is to compare and identify the differences between
two editions and better understanding analysis of Invocacion y Danza. To analysis
selected comparison used in the Alirio Diaz and Pepe Romero editions.

1.2 Objectives
This study is show difference between two editions from same piece. This
analysis includes the background of this piece, the structure, and guitar technical of
this work. The editions will be analyzed to show some ideas of two guitarists who
edited this piece.

1.3 Scope of study


- Learn the composition structure of Invocacion y Danza.
- Study the original edition (Alirio Diaz) and alternative edition (Pepe
Romero).
- Identify the differences of two editions in each section.
- Learn the possibility of guitar techniques and musical ideas that can able
to play on the guitar.

1.4 Benefits
- To understanding of the background of Invocacion y Danza.
- Use to teaching in high level and development of skills knowledge as a
guitar instructor.
- Learn how differences of two editions and practice with adapt to able to
personal technical.

CHAPTER II
LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Biography of Joaquin Rodrigo (22 November 1901 – 6 July 1999)


Joaquin Rodrigo was born in Sagunto, Valencia of Spain. He was the
youngest son of his parents. In 1905 he completely lost his sight after an epidemic of
diphtheria in Spain. Rodrigo moved to Valencia with his family when he was four
years old and entered a college for blind children to begin his study.
He was particularly interested in literature and music. At the age of eight
Rodrigo began to study piano, violin and solfege.
