Last summer, I went to London. I stayed in my friend’s house for few days. One day, my friend, Michael and I took a walk in the
centre of London. I wanted to try a tube to reach a place in London. A tube is a subway, or underground railway. Michael told me that
many people lived in the city and worked in London. Commuters in London usually used the tube.
In the morning, Michael said, the commuters who wanted to travel by tube, had to queue for tickets at the ticket counter. However,
they could buy the tickets in automatic ticket machines. Some people who regularly used the tube preferred season tickets. It cost less
than paying separately each time they wanted to take the tube. After they have the ticket they show the ticket to the collector at the
burrier. The commuters then stepped on to the descending escalator an in short time they were in the crowded platform waiting for the
tube come in. During rush hour there was a tube to the city every a few minutes.
After the passengers arrived at their destination, he added, they were quickly out of the tube and went on to the escalator again.
They walked away from the underground station and rushed to their offices. Through Michael’s explanation, now I know about the routine
in London on weekdays. All people seemed very busy here.

My mother accompanied me to school on the first day. Other parents accompanied their children as well. We all waited in front
of the school office. Soon a teacher came and led us to some classrooms. There we were put into four separate classes. This was when
some children began to cry as the parents were not allowed into the classrooms. I did not cry because I had been to kindergarten before.
Actually my mother went home soon after for she knew I would be all right.
It was an enjoyable time for me as I got to know my new classmates. The teacher was very busy writing down our particulars so
we had plenty of time to ourselves. Meantime some children continued to sob while their parents looked in anxiously through the windows.
Soon recess came. Some of us headed for the tuck-shop while the rest headed for their parents. I bought a drink with the money my
mother gave me. Getting to know my new friends had made me thirsty.
After recess we went back to out classroom and my new friends and I managed to coax two boys to stop crying. In fact, soon
we were laughing and playing together. Once in a while the teacher had to tell us to keep quiet as we were making too much noise. Still
some parents looked in anxiously through the windows.
Finally the bell rang for us to go home. Some of us were very relieved to be reunited with our parents. I too was glad to see my
mother waiting for me at the school gate. I had made many friends. It had been a wonderful first day at school.
VISIT TO DOCTOR
One morning I woke up with a very sore throat. I could not swallow without feeling great pain. I told my mother about it. She
decided that I should skip school that day. She was going to take me to see a doctor. At 9 a.m., my mother and I took the bus to town-to
see our family doctor.
We waited for a while at the clinic before I got to see the doctor. Dr. Lee examined me carefully. I had a slight fever and other
symptoms that indicated that I might be coming down with influenza. So he gave me an injection and prescribed some oral medicine for
me. He also wrote me a medical certificate so that I could be absent from school for a couple of days.
By the time we reached home, my throat was definitely not as sore as it was before. The injection must be doing its work. I took
the oral medicine diligently and after two days of rest I was well on my way back to health again.
