Allocation
Allocation involves those questions where you have to form groups based on allocations of different
items. For example 5 persons having different coloured cars, different numbered houses and
different pets. As must be obvious, organising the information is the critical part in such questions.
Example 1: Ram, Rahim and Robert work in 3 different companies and use a different vehicle for
commuting. One who works in TTC uses a motorcycle. Ram drives a car. Rahim works in P&J.
1) Find who works in HAL
2) Find who takes the bus to office.
Table:
Ram Rahim Robert
Company
Vehicle
Information 2:
Ram drives a car: This goes straight as fair information in the table
Information 3:
Rahim works in P&J: This is also fair information
This mean Ram and Rahim cannot be the person working in TTC.
Therefore Robert must be working in TTC and driving a motorcycle
Now we see that the company of Ram and the vehicle of Rahim are not known to us. The questions
indicate that one of them is working in HAL and someone takes a bus to office.
Therefore Ram must be working in HAL and Rahim must be taking a bus to office.
Example 2: There are 5 friends studying in different department of the same college. They all came
wearing different dresses on the annual day function: jeans, suit, salwar, saree, skirt. They also took
part in different events in the function. One wearing saree was the anchor of the entire program.
The one wearing salwar took part in fashion show. The psychology student wore jeans and history
student wore skirt. The management student wore the suit and took part in quiz competition. The
commerce student was not wearing the saree and one who took part in dace competition was not a
history student. One of them was a Math student and one of them took part in singing competition.
Which of the following statement is true?
a) Psychology student took part in singing competition
b) One wearing salwar was the Math student
c) History student was in the fashion show
d) None of the above
In this question the names are not given so its not required. We will select some other parameter
say the department they study in as the title or the starting point
Psych History Math Commerce Mang
Dress
Event
Rough information:
1)
Saree
Anchor
2)
Salwar
Fashion Show
So these two groups will go as a whole in any of the 2 columns. Lets see where we can fit them, not
in mang student, not psych ( already wearing jeans), not in History (already wearing skirt).
So they have to go in Math or Commerce. Since commerce student will not bwear a saree therefore
she will wear salwar and participate in fashion show, and the Math student will wear a saree and
anchor the show.
Psych History Math Commerce Mang
Dress Jeans Skirt Saree Salwar Suit
Event Dance Anchor Fashion show Quiz
History student will not dance so psychology student will and therefore history student will sing.
