B Movies
There should be another Walk of Fame in Hollywood Boulevard with the names of actors, actresses and
directors from low-budget films. Thanks to them, many people have enjoyed B movies at cheap movie theatres in
city poorer quarters and small rural towns, and on TV off-prime-time shows. Here come some examples of low-
budget films and their stars and directors.

The Giant Claw is not the most captivating of the classic 1950s “giant
monster running out of control” movies, but it must be seen exclusively for the
fact that it features the most-ridiculous-looking movie monster of all time. This
“antimatter space big bird,” as it was called in the film, is so laughably stupid
that it’s hard to believe they actually chose to show it so extensively in the
movie trailer rather than hiding it from sight. The poor actors weren’t even
conscious of how incredibly pathetic the monster would be until they saw the
completed film, and by then it was too late.

Cal Bolder appeared in several films and a number of TV shows from

the period between 1960 and 1968, but his career was never really
successful. His best known role was in the 1966 film Jesse James Meets
Frankenstein's Daughter, a mix of the western and horror film genres. In this
film, James and his partner, Hank Tracy (played by C. Bolder), arrive in
Arizona to rob a bank. Hank is badly wounded and is taken to Dr Maria
Frankenstein's house for treatment. When Dr. Frankenstein (who is the original
Dr. Frankenstein's daughter) sees big, muscular Hank, she decides that he
would be a good candidate for brain replacement surgery in order to create a
monster who will do all she wants. In the end, monster Hank kills Dr. Frankenstein and is then shot by one of the
locals.

Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter and Billy the Kid vs. Dracula were the final films in director
William "One Shot" Beaudine’s career. Beginning his career in the silents, he directed more than 150 films and
he was practically the inventor of 'B' movies. He made pictures in less than a week (recording scenes in only one
take or ‘shot’) and always under budget.

Do you remember Arnold Schwarzenegger in his first Terminator film?

That was in 1984. But his very first film was 1969 Hercules in New York in
which he was credited as “Arnold Strong, Mr. Universe” because
“Schwarzenegger” was too long. A massive 22-year-old with zero acting
experience or charisma, he’s absolutely lost in this film, casually walking
around New York and competing as a pro wrestler. His
diction was so unintelligible that he had to be
completely dubbed. It’s captivatingly bad because
there’s so little evidence of the fun actor he later
became.

Finally, there is the case of Bela Lugosi: although very successful during the early
years of his career, Bela Lugosi simply disappeared from films after his role in Abbott and
Costello Meet Frankenstein in 1948. Four years later, he restarted his career –this time as a
B-movie star– in Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla. He was one of the first celebrities to
confess his drug addiction (morphine) to the press. He died a year later from a heart attack at age 73.
