cities, and roads.

b) using cardinal directions on maps.

Activity This learning activity will help students learn and show what they
know about maps, map symbols, globes, and cardinal directions. The
teacher will provide a lesson using a teacher web tool called SMART
Exchange. This tool will allow teachers to use other teacher’s lessons
to help students learn about any subject. The teacher is able to
choose a subject, grade level, and search specific terms. The lesson
chosen for this SOL objective is called, “Maps and Globes”. For the
students, the tool will allow them to work collaboratively as a class to
work out and/or talk through the different activities that the lesson
provide. The tool will allow students to complete activities using
methods such as “click and drag” and “fill in the blank”. The lesson is
created to provide a fun and engaging way to learn about geography.
The students will be taking turns completing the activities or will work
together. To be fair, the teacher will take volunteers first, and then
will pick students to participate. At the start of class, it may be helpful
to create a KWL chart. KWL stands for “What I Know, What I Wonder,
and What I Learned.” The teacher will go over the chart as a class, and
the students will tell the teacher what they want to know and wonder
(about the lesson). Once they have completed the “K” and “W”, the
teacher will start the lesson. The activities that are included consists
of many ideas and concepts. There are a few activities where there
could be two students up at a time. For example, in one of the slides
there are two pictures that depict a map of North America and a
globe. There is an action button that says “pull” with an arrow beside
the picture, so that the student can slide the picture over. Once the
picture has slid over, there is information about maps typed in its
spot. This specific activity will help students learn how to compare
and contrast. With the information given, the teacher will explain the
complicated parts as well as have the students complete more
activates within the lesson. The teacher will go through each of the

slides with the class, but this lesson is solely for student engagement
and individual understanding. For some of the activities, the teacher
will demonstrate what to do, and will then allow the students to do

the same (by taking turns). There are directions located at the top of
the screen for the students that need extra help. Some students may
not want to participate in the lesson, so it is essential for the teacher
to continuously ask questions to make sure everyone is on the right
track. While the students are working on the activities, the teacher
will carefully watch the student’s progress and will take notes on
what the students are struggling with. At the end of the lesson, the
teacher will refer back to the KWL chart. The class as a whole will
explain to the teacher what they have learned from the lesson.
