What is register?

Describes the various styles of language available for writing or speaking


It has 5 language registers and 5 language styles or Speech Styles
• Intimate
• Casual
• Consultative
• Formal and,
• Frozen

One of the Language Register or Speech Style is

Frozen:
• Language that rarely or never change
• It does not change, this type of language often learned and repeated by rote.
• It is the most formal commnicative style that is usually used in respectful situation or
formal ceremony.
• It is also called oratorical style which characterized by the very careful, has fixed form,
and has symbolic or historical nature.
Examples:
"Yes your honor"
"Yes my Lord"
"I object"
• Also known as fixed speech.
• This is a style for declamation and for print. The listener or reader is not allowed to
question the speaker (or
writer)
Examples:
Pledge of Allegiance, Laws, Prayer and etc.
• Usually uses long sentences with good grammar and vocabulary.
Examples:
Poem, Literatures and etc.
• The used of language is fixed and relatively static.
• Some item like careful development of thoughts, logical panning and attention to stylistic
features, word appropriateness, It has a rule of usage, and so come into full play
• The styles invites the reader to enter into personal experience of creative discovery, such
as literary text, like poetry, which he may Memorize, replay and refeel, and to find more
profound values and meanings with each repetition, transforming the texts into frozen
one. (Broderick, 1976)
• The writing reflects the effort of revision.
• This style is more characteristic of writing than speech, reserved for the most formal
occasion when spoken, and then read.
• Documents written in this style practically have no variation in the range of their
expression, no deviation from present norms (e.g., statutes, briefs, apellate, opinions,
insurance policies, contract, leases, and wills).
• Incorruptible : Fastened securly in position, everlasting, fixed
• It is a very formal style where listeners are intended to give or find meanings or
interpretation to theirselves it uses figurative language.
