NOTES: NOTES CONT....:

1. GENERAL.
5.2.2 External walls must be of cavity construction. They shall be constructed of block on flat for the inside
These drawings are to be read in conjunction with ESB specification 13320 Rev 8 leaf and block on edge for the outer leaf. The outer leaf may be of a material which can be certified to
'General Specification for MV Substation' and the 'National Code of Practice for Customer Interface which ESB Networks satisfaction to provide the equivalent and moisture barrier.
may be downloaded from ESB's web-site (www.esb.ie/esbnetworks).
5.2.3 The inner and outer leaf will be separated by a 100mm cavity. The cavity at the door reveal shall be

G wall cavity. G
Failure to comply in full with the requirements of this specification will delay installation of supply.

These drawings relate to the ESB MV Substation and do not show the customers switchroom. 5.3 SUBSTATION ROOF.

2. PLANNING PERMISSION. For stand alone buildings or substation buildings adjoining customer switch rooms an over hung poured
concrete roof is the preferred option. This design is less prone to leaks and requires little maintenance.
The customer is responsible for obtaining planning permission for the MV sub-station building. Precast slabs or permanent formwork are NOT permitted.

3. FIRE SAFETY REGULATIONS. In the case of an 'Incorporated MV Station' the roof structure will be as detailed in sheet 16 of this drawing.
Precast slabs or permanent formwork are NOT permitted.
The substation building must comply with the FIRE SERVICES ACT, and all regulations
F made under this act. The location and construction of the sub-station building must also F
comply with the Fire Safety requirements of ESB specification 13320 Rev 8. 5.4 EARTHING - MV & LV EARTHS.

Electrical smoke detectors are only permitted if mounted on the substation door. A special hatch is fitted 5.4.1 Floor steel earthing will be carried out and tested for in accordance with requirements of section 5.1
to the door at the manufacturing stage. The door supplier must be advised of this requirement. Plastic trunking
is required and no earth wire is permitted. Air sampling systems are permitted provided the the pipe work is 5.4.2 Copper Earth Mats. A copper earth will always be required outside substation doors. The earth mat
non conductive and the equipment does not require the sub station to be opened for annual inspection of will be purchased only from an approved ESB supplier. The earth mat will be placed at a depth of
the pipe work. 200mm below ground and the earth mat tail will carry into the substation in the central cable duct.

4. SAFETY - STATUTORY OBLIGATIONS 5.4.3 MV and LV earths will always be required at the ESB substation, the earth can extend up to 25 meters.
Therefore, the surrounding grounds cannot be finished until these earth wires have been installed and
The customer is responsible for managing safety for the entire building project in accordance with tested. Details of the location for the earth wire must be discussed with the local ESB representative.

and subsequent amendments.
4.3 Safety, Health & Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations. Non metallic cladding is the preferred option as it does not present a safety risk from an electrical point of view.

5. CRITICAL ASPECTS OF THE BUILDING. Sharp edges are not acceptable. Cladding should not provide a climbing aid onto the building.

5.1 RE-INFORCING STEEL.

7. SUBSTATION DOORS.
D Construction steel in the concrete floor of the substation shall be separated from the metalwork of any D
other part of the building. All the steel mesh in the substation floor shall be connected metallically to form an Galvanised steel substation doors must be installed to ESB specification 08100. Doors must be sourced

to download from ESB's web-site. (www.esb.ie/esbnetworks).
Steel mesh shall be exposed for inspection and electrical testing at locations as follows;
The size of opening required for the installation of the doors is detailed on this drawing.
5.1.1 At the door end of the central cable duct, a 16mm diameter re-bar shall extend across the duct and
be welded to the re-inforcing steel on each side. This is the bonding point for the station earth grid. External cladding may be permitted on doors (refer to point 6 above) provided there is no breach of the
(figure A sheet 2) galvanising. Cladding shall add no more than 40mm to the overall depth dimension of the doors.

5.1.2 At the rear right hand corner, a 16mm diameter re-bar shall extend across the duct and The extra weight bearing on hinges should not be excessive. The doors shall open through 180 and it is not

C access mechanisms, ventilation and any other facilities shall not be impeded. Sharp edges are not acceptable. C
5.1.3 Electrical test point: In the duct right hand wall, midway along the left hand cable duct.
(figure B sheet 2). If a smoke detector is required this must be advised to the approved door supplier at the time of ordering.
5.1.4 Electrical test point: In the duct wall, midway along the right hand slab at the rear of the station. A drip rail must be provided at the top edge of the door if it is fitted flush to a multi storey building facade
(figure A sheet 2).
If required doors may be painted to blend with the building facade.
5.1.5 Test points can be made by securing a timber or foam block 150 x 150 x 50mm deep (fig B sheet 2),
to a cross in the steel mesh at a central point in the duct wall. The block will lie against the inside of
the shuttering. This will form a void in the poured concrete when the shuttering is removed. Installations
that fail electrical continuity tests will be rejected, correction and re-instatement will be made at the
developer's expense. gbb engineering & design CLIENT:

NOTES:

1. GROUND WORKS (EXCAVATION).

Excavation for strip foundations will be according to the dimensions shown on this drawing sheet. These
dimensions are given as a minimum. However, it may be necessary to excavate deeper to reach a
G sufficiently firm stratum. G

2. UNDERGROUND CABLES.
Underground cables constitute one of the the more common hazards encountered when digging in
in the street, near buildings or on building sites, always assume electric cables will be present. If ESB
cables, cable slabs or warning tape are uncovered then digging must stop until the site has been
inspected and made safe by ESB personnel.

The customer is required to ensure that when digging is taking place, the location of all underground
F
cables in the vicinity is known, maps giving the general location of cables are available from ESB. F
