Yet better then myself I have known you We Filipinos give honor to you For this country is free because of you
You wrote a poem when you were eight
When I’m still a clueless and innocent child You were already writing about freedom When I’m still learning how to spell a word
You’re a genius who studied foreign languages
You’re already patriotic at an early age Many people look up to you in awe For you’ve done immeasurable things along your journey
Your weapon was not a bolo nor a gun
But a mighty pen so great to free us all Your words and writings inspired our hearts It bring strength to us all Filipinos!
Historians have casted limitations on your name
I believe you’re not more than the person on books You always love to talk about the truth And that always inspires me the most “Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda, known as Jose Rizal, the greatest hero of the Philippines was indeed the pride of Malayan race. He is also known as a many-splendored genius. He was an anthropologist, botanist, businessman, cartographer, dramatist, economist, educator, engineer, essayist, entomologist, ethnologist, farmer, folklorist, geographer, grammarian, historian, horticulturist, humorist, lexicographer, linguist, musician, novelist, painter, physician, poet, philologist, philosopher, polemist, psychologist, satirist, sculptor, sportsman, sociologist, surveyor, traveler, and zoologist. Rizal was a patriot, hero, and a martyr. He consecrated his God-given talent, and even sacrificed his own life, for the redemption and welfare of his people. Rizal when he was a child was very far from a typical child as of our generation now. He was a genius that he can do what a normal child can’t do. He could read and write at age 5. He was already writing drama and poems when he was still a child. Compare to us, all we know was to play and enjoy ourselves. At that age still, we can barely compose a complete sentence, yet he can do more. We are still in awe of how the world exist while he wrote poems. Rizal do things beyond a normal eight years old child can do. He wrote about freedom and languages when we are still clueless and innocent child. He really has a superb intellect. He can learn a foreign language after a few days yet I, even months I can’t even speak such language. He is really a genius. He has done so many things for our country. Through his writings we Filipinos were enlightened about how our rights were abolished by the Spaniards. He is very brave to set his mind into saving our country. He became a traveler. Each country and places he visited occurred many important things in his life. He met several amazing people who made a significant role along his journey. He is a very brave young man who used his God-given talent for others and not for himself. He is such a kind and selfless man. He was not terrified with the strong power of the Spaniards but instead he let himself shine and speak up on the issue that he and his country is facing. This could be a strong passion and determination to set free a country that deserves liberty. On my readings, Rizal never craved for political power, but instead he served as a catalyst that silently works great in his own ways. At the end of his life, he has remained fighting for freedom, and until his last breath, he has fought a good fight even though it caused him his life. His way of declaring war to the Spaniards was very famous for he didn’t fight to shed blood but through his writings. We Filipinos express our deepest gratitude to him by always remembering what he has done to this country. Many of us, young children were inspired of his life and works. We honor and respect him. Rizal is a very humane, compassionate and benevolent citizen. He has dealt with social problems thru his popular books Noli Me T’angere and El Filibusterismo. If there were only thousands of persons like Rizal, I believe our society will be at good condition. I always hope I could be like him in some areas of his life, but I know that it is far from reality to happen. But what I am doing is that I am performing at my best, making every effort to become a productive individual in various aspects of my life. For I have learned through reading his life was “it was not the world’s way that anything worth having should come without effort”.
