Economy
The Reserve Bank of India has announced that new one rupee note has been printed by the government
and will be soon put into circulation. The new note will feature „Bharat Sarkar‟ on its masthead, and
„Government of India‟ printed below that. In contrast all the other currencies in India has „Bharatiya
Reserve Bank‟ and „Reserve Bank of India‟ printed on them. This is because the one-rupee note has always
been issued by the central government.The watermarks of the Re 1 note will include the Ashoka Pillar,
the hidden numeral “1” and the hidden word “Bharat” in Hindi). The note will also feature an image of the
„Sagar Samrat‟ oil exploration rig. The new Re.1 one will be predominantly pink-green on the obverse
and reverse in combination with other colours. The new one rupee note will bear the rupee symbol. It will
be 9.7 by 6.3 cm in dimension.The central bank said that the note will bear the signature of Shakthikanta
Das , Secretary, Ministry of Finance , rest other notes bear the signature of RBI Governor.
The Income Tax department (ITD) announced that tax payers can now link their Aadhaar card no
with and Permanent Account Number ( PAN) by using SMS based facility.The two no‟s can be linked

India lost its fastest growing majority economy tag in the Jan-March period, which was the 4th quarter

The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Modi on 24th May 2017 approved the proposal to phase out Foreign
Investment Promotion board (FIPB) and allowing administrative ministries and departments to process
applications for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) requiring government approval.

The GST Council has finalised a 4-slab service tax structure at the rates of 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent as
against the single rate of 15%. GST regime is scheduled to be implemented from July 1.
The GST council has fixed the rate of 1211 items. Household items like Sugar, Tea, Coffee and edible
oil will attract 5% levy. Cereals and milk will be exempted from the tax. Manufactured goods will attract
18% levy. Luxury cars will attract 28% GST in addition to a cess of 15%. Small petrol cars will attract 28%
GST plus a 1% cess, and diesel cars will be taxed at 28% plus 3% cess. Capital goods, a key asset for the
manufacturing sector, will be taxed at 28%. Aerated drinks will fall under the 28% tax bracket.

PFRDA –CRISIL report titled „ Financial Security for India‟s elderly – The imperatives‟ on 15th

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has tightened the rules around making the Joint Lenders‟ Forum
(JLF) more effective, directing banks not to break any rules and to meet all deadlines. The RBI has said that
any breach of rules would attract a monetary penalty. India‟s foreign exchange (Forex) reserves have
increased by $1.594 billion as
RBI‟s Statistical supplement. The increase was due to increase in foreign currency assets (FCAs).
The Union cabinet approved an ordinance to amend the Banking Regulation Act for dealing with non
performing assets (NPA‟s) in the banking system to eliminate the problems of bad loans.

The Union cabinet has approved the modifications in the recommendations of 7th Central Pay
Commission on pay and Pensionary benefits in the course of their implementation.

UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific ( ESCAP) has released its annual
flagship report titled “ The Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the pacific 2017” said that India is
expected to achieve 7.1% economic growth in 2017 as re-monetisation restores consumption and
infrastructure funding increases .

Fitch, in its latest rating review, has affirmed India‟s sovereign rating at BBB-, which is the lowest
investment grade rating. According to the rating agency, India‟s general government debt burden was
67.9% of GDP whereas the „BBB‟ median is 40.9%.

Science and Technology
Scientists at IIT Kharagpur has come up with a new technology known as „soil-to-soil‟
manufacturing technology for manufacturing cheaper, quicker and pollution-free fuel simply known as bio
fuel.. The technology is in the process of being patented.
United States for the first time has successfully tested its defence system against an intercontinental
ballistic missile (ICBM). The test comes at the backdrop of US‟s increased tensions with North Korea.

India‟s own Global Positioning System “NavIC” will be operational from 2018.The Indian system is
expected to be significantly more accurate than the GPS
powered by American Satellites. The American GPS with 24 satellites in a constellation has wider reach

Construction works for building Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) has commenced in Chile , which
will become the world‟s largest optical telescope .The telescope will be constructed at a 3,000 meter-high

Observatory.The telescope is scheduled to commence its operations in 2024.
