EXPERIMENT No: 10

TITLE:

“To Determine the Coefficient of Discharge for a Trapezoidal Notch”

INTRODUCTION:
A trapezoidal notch is a combination of a rectangular notch and two triangular notches. It is, thus
obvious that the discharge over such notch will be the sum of the discharge over the rectangular and
triangular notches.

OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this experiment to determine the Coefficient of discharge for Trapezoidal Notch.

PROCEDURE:
 Determine the volumetric capacity of the measuring tank.
 Allow the content discharge to flow through the channel.
 Lead should be place properly.
 Now fill the tank with water by centrifugal pump.
 Note the time to fill measuring tank.
 Now record the reading of the hook gauge.
 Repeat the experiment for different heads of water and find the discharge.

3 1.7 45 3.17 1000 315.46 481.74 0.65

DISSCUSSION:
 Water head is denoted which is converted from ‘ml’ to cm.
 Angle of trapezoidal notch is denoted.
 Time to fill the jug with water is noted using stopwatch.
 Volume of jug is measured.
 Actual discharge is calculated by Qac=V/t.
 Theoretical discharge is calculated by Qth=(2g)1/2(h)3/2(2/3b+8/15htan Ѳ)
 Cd is calculated by dividing actual and theoretical discharge.

CONCLUSION:
 Water head of 1.2cm the coefficient of discharge through trapezoidal notch is 0.78.
 Water head of 1.3cm the coefficient of discharge through trapezoidal notch is 0.76.
 Water head of 1.7cm the coefficient of discharge through trapezoidal notch is 0.65.
