Online information.
Class
Learning Living Systems:
Objective 3.6 The student will investigate and understand that ecosystems support a diversity of plants
. and animals that share limited resources. Key concepts include
a) aquatic ecosystems;
b) terrestrial ecosystems;
Content

c) populations and communities; and

d) the human role in conserving limited resources.

Online
Activity For this to be an online, asynchronous activity; I would use a screen casting tool to lecture my students on
the subject of ecosystems. After the students view the screencast lecture, I will have them use the tool to
practice what they have learned. If it were an in-class lecture, I would present the lecture to them and
then have them use provided laptops/tablets to launch the tool for practice. The students will launch the
Gizmos site, Select Gizmos by Grade and Topic, Select Science Grades 3-5 Life Science: Ecosystems. Here
the students will be able to select and practice their understanding of prairie, forest and pond
ecosystems.
While using the tool, the student will be able to…

 Classify consumers as herbivores or carnivores.

 Investigate the interdependence of the organisms in an ecosystem.
 Determine what each organism eats based on the results of experiments.
 Explore the long-term effects of changes to the ecosystem.
 Understand the role each type (consumer, producer, decomposer) of creature plays in the carbon cycle.
 Determine the feeding dependencies in a forest ecosystem.
 Determine which consumers are decomposers.
 Interpret pictographs and line graphs.
 Investigate how the levels of dissolved oxygen in a pond vary throughout a day.
 Learn the source of dissolved oxygen in a pond.
 Determine the effect of dissolved oxygen on the fish in a pond.
 Compare dissolved oxygen levels in warm and cold ponds.
Pedagogy

 Determine the effect of farms on dissolved oxygen concentrations. (Extension)

The student will be required to note at least three things learned from the activity and return it to the
teacher.
