Section A: Directed writing

[35 marks]

[Time suggested: 45 minutes]

There have been many complaints about the school library. On behalf of your
schoolmates, write a letter of complaint to the Principal about the poor conditions of
the library. You should also give some suggestions to improve the library.
Use the notes below to write your letter.

Complaints:
 library too small
 tables are crowded
 fans not working
 books outdated
 few reference books
 not enough staff
 opening hours too short

Suggestions:
 enlarge the library
 install new fans
 buy new books
 employ more librarians
 extend opening hours

When writing the letter, you should remember to:

 lay out the letter correctly (addresses, date, salutation, title, closing)
 use all the notes given

For your letter, you will receive up to 15 marks for the format and content points and
up to 20 marks for the quality of your writing.

Section B: Continuous Writing

[50 marks]
[Time suggested: One hour]

Write a composition of about 350 words on one of the following topics.

1. Describe your family in an interesting way.

2. It is better to spend your holidays locally than abroad. Do you agree?
3. Why is recycling a good practice?
4. Write a story of how a close friend betrayed you. End your story with:
“Even though I forgave him, I knew that it would never be the same again.”
5. ‘Do not judge a book by its cover’. Write a story of how true this saying is.
