Dear Mr Benson

Request for information: Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000

I am formally responding on behalf of Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) to your

request received by email on 26 April 2010 for a disclosure of information under the
Freedom of Information Act 2000.

You requested various pieces of information concerning advice and guidance given to staff
and students pertaining to terrorism legislation.

The University does not provide information or guidance to its staff or students of this type,
nor does it have a procedure to review or assess reading lists, module descriptors or other
teaching materials which explicitly or in practice consider questions of safety and risk
under terrorism legislation as part of its remit.

LJMU does not have a system, policy or procedure in place for dealing with any potential
actions taken by the authorities against the institution, its staff or students under terrorism
legislation, nor does it have a system, policy or procedure in place for ‘preventing violent
extremism’.

However, the University does provide general guidance and expectations to its staff and
students and this can be found on the University’s website in the following documents:

Staff Handbook http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/staffhandbookLJMU.htm

Student Handbook http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/lea/100491.htm

The University considers it has fully complied with your request, but if you wish to seek an
internal review, you should do so in writing to Mr Brian Kerrigan, Director of Corporate
Services, Liverpool John Moores University, Rodney House, Liverpool L3 5UX. A copy of
the University’s Freedom of Information Complaints and Appeals Procedure is enclosed.
