Request for Information under the Freedom of Information Act

I can now respond to your request as follows:

Q1 Does your institution provide any information or advice to students or

staff on any potential liability under Terrorism legislation which might
result from accessing materials for teaching or research ? If so please
provide copies of any documents held which detail or refer to such
information or advice.

Q2 Does your institution have any kind of procedure to review or assess

reading lists, module descriptors or other teaching materials which
explicitly or in practice considers questions of safety and risk under
terrorism legislation as part of its remit ? For example does the institution
have anything similar or analogous to the 'module review process'
established at Nottingham University described here :

http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/story.asp?storycode=407122;
http://www.teachingterrorism.net/2009/08/03/nottingham-censorship-a-

dealing with any potential actions taken by the authorities against the
institution, its students or staff under Terrorism legislation ? If so please
supply a copy of the policy and advise the date it was decided upon and

'preventing violent extremism' as recommended for example in the

does not have recorded information to supply a response to question 3.

details are provided in a booklet called ‘The I’ and ‘The I’ organiser where
information is supplied all new and returning students. The relevant
extract from this booklet is detailed below.
Is UCLan involved in tackling terrorism?
The threat of terrorist activity is real for all of us, within this country and
across the globe. UCLan's Student Support Service is working
collaboratively with the Lancashire Constabulary to ensure that the
University community remains a safe place to study, to live and to
socialise.

To raise awareness for all students UCLan is launching the 'Be Vigilant
Campaign.' This will involve the sharing of information during student
induction and throughout the year. Be vigilant!

Possible signs
o Extremist behaviour
o Extreme views
o Isolation
o Circle of friends
o Absence from class
o Unusual or unplanned travel

Be vigilant
o in your house/halls of residence be observant, think about unusual
behaviour amongst your flat/house mates.
o in your local café or bar.
o shopping or travelling by public transport (bus, rail, air, sea).
o in your class - be observant; think about unusual behaviour or other
students' expression of extreme views.
o socialising - observe unusual or extreme behaviour.

AND REPORT IT:

Your personal safety is important and we all have a responsibility to be
vigilant. If you see anything unusual share your suspicion .

If you believe someone you know or have seen is behaving suspiciously
