Principles and Concepts behind Award Criteria:
1.1 The QUALITY AWARD CRITERIA have been revised to be in line with Quality Management
Process Model contained in the ISO 9000 family of standards. The questionnaire largely
includes the aspects outlined in the above standards particularly ISO 9004:2009.
1.2 In order to determine the acceptable level for the awards, certain performance maturity levels
as contained in ISO 9004:2009 have been used in the criteria. The details are as follows:
Maturity level Performance level Guidance
1 No formal approach No systematic approach evident; no results, poor
results or unpredictable results.
2 Reactive approach Problem or prevention based systematic approach;
minimum data on improvement results available.
3 Stable formal Systematic process-based approach, early stage of
system approach systematic improvements; data available on
conformance to objectives and existence of
improvement trends.
4 Continual Improvement process in use; good results and
improvement sustained improvement trends.

 internal and external communication plans;
 information on hazardous materials including each material’s potential impact on
environment & measures to be taken in case of accidental release

Environment Performance Indicators (EPIs)

Indicators are a basic and important part of the environment performance evaluation process. They
facilitate the collection of meaningful data and allow accurate expression of environmental
information. This information can be used by management to minimise impacts even further.
Indicators should be established to cover all systems including management, operational and state of
the environment areas or systems.

13
Scheme of Award for Excellence in : Environment Management
Page 3/6

EPI’s generally deal with procedures, plans and tracking. Examples include training plans, legal
requirements, resource allocation, design of control systems, setting of goals, documentation,
corrective actions, tracking of parameters and results, identification of root causes, and other activities
done primarily by management employees.

Selecting Indicators for the Operational Area

Environmental indicators for the operational area help to assess the actual discharges, waste
generated, resources used, and other aspects of the actual facility and equipment used to produce
the product or service.

EPIs for the operational areas provide information to management regarding use of resources,
energy, etc. and are inputs to the system to assess efficiency. These indicators should also assess
outputs from the system such as products, services, wastes, heat, discharges emissions, radiation
and others.
Management & Operational systems determine the level of impact on the environment. These
indicators should define ways to measure impact on plant and animal life, water, air and other
resources.

Interested Party Concern

Every organization has interested parties. It may be an individual or group concerned with or affected
by the environmental performance of that organization. Interested parties of an organization includes:
i) customers and end users,
ii) people in the organization,
iii) owners / investors (i.e., shareholders, individuals/groups, NGOs, government authorities that have a
specific interest in the organization
iv) suppliers and partners, and
v) society in terms of community and the public affected by the organization or its products.

 Organisation should share actions taken to develop a green supply chain such as EHS
priorities for suppliers, encourage its supply chain to comply with environmental criteria,
reduce wastage, get ISO 14001 certification etc.

 Similarly its product should comply with RoHS and E-Waste Regulations and contain
toxic materials such as Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, PBB & PBDE etc within defined levels
to address End of Life issues effectively.

 Society results: What the organisation is achieving in relation to local, national and
international society. That is, how the organisation is viewed by and impacts on the
community of which it is a part. Society Results is about what an organisation does to
contribute to society over and above its core purpose and whether it is following a
sustainable business model which is environmentally friendly and meets environmental
norms & standards.
 Key performance results: What the organisation is achieving in relation to its planned
performance, i.e. how well the organisation has achieved what it planned to achieve,
both in technical & financials.
 Method of Self Evaluation for applicants:
 Evidence about successful achievement of Results will be largely numerical with
explanatory narratives. The organization is expected to have performance indicators for
each of the 4 Results criteria which should be measurable on a pre-defined scale.
 These criteria can be measured as targets, trends and/or comparisons over time or with
existing benchmarks. There should also exist evidence that the Enablers have ‘caused’
the Results to be achieved.

organizations, particularly new businesses, in response to identified opportunities”.
Entrepreneurship involves qualities such as innovation, invention of new ideas, products and
processes, promotion of these products and ideas and building an organization with scarce resources.
The entrepreneur must always find alternatives and never take no for an answer.

This Award which was introduced from 2009-10, expects to discover, encourage and recognise such
entrepreneurs as well as enterprising organizations.

The Award could be given to an individual entrepreneur or a Team of Entrepreneurs working

jointly.
