WHAT IS CIVIL ENGINEERING?

Civil engineers design and maintain the infrastructure that supports our civilization. The
world around us is constantly developing and changing. Cities are expanding, new
transportation systems are emerging and natural refuges are being restored.
Civil engineers guide this development and supervise complex interactions between
nature and technology. In addition to promoting development, civil engineers also study
our impact on the environment and develop methods for protecting our natural
resources, such as constructing bike and walking paths for cities, finding new methods
to produce and use renewable energy, and helping to manage the effects of pollution.

Civil engineering
In modern usage, civil engineering is a broad field of engineering that deals
with the planning, construction, and maintenance of fixed structures, or public
works, as they are related to earth, water, or civilization and their processes.
Most civil engineering today deals with power plants, bridges, roads, railways, structures, water
supply, irrigation, environmental, sewer, flood control, transportation, telecommunications and traffic.
In essence, civil engineering may be regarded as the profession that makes the world a more
agreeable place in which to live.
Engineering has developed from observations of the ways natural and constructed systems react
and from the development of empirical equations that provide bases for design.
Civil engineering is the broadest of the engineering fields, partly because it is the oldest of all
engineering fields.
In fact, engineering was once divided into only two fields, military and civil.
Civil engineering is still an umbrella term, comprised of many related specialities

What is Civil Engineering?

Civil engineering is an arm of engineering that focuses on the maintenance, construction, and design
of different types of public works such as transportation systems, government buildings, water
systems, and public facilities like train stations and airports.

Civil engineers are mostly employees of municipalities, federal governments, or private firms that
have been contracted to design structures and construct public works. The basic requirement for this
profession is a 4-year degree in civil engineering. Additional relevant education and certifications can
be acquired to increase one's qualifications in their career.

What is Civil Engineering? Civil engineering is all about improving and protecting the world we inhabit. It
involves the planning, design and construction of facilities that we require for everyday living, industry
and transport. It offers a challenging and wide-ranging career which can include the development of
airports, offshore oil platforms, bridges, roads, railways, waste collection and treatment systems, and
water supply systems. Civil engineering also aims to solve environmental issues such as air pollution,
coastal protection and waste treatment. Civil Engineering • Transportation: providing new and improved
innovations to meet peoples travel needs on land, sea air and reducing traffic congestion. •
Environmental and water: designing systems that will render toxic substances harmless, treat both
water and waste water, reduce solid waste volumes, eliminate contaminants from the air, prevent
flooding, create energy from hydroelectric power facilities and protect our coasts from erosion. This
includes design of dams, canals, treatment plants and pipelines. What do Civil Engineers do? Civil
engineers design, construct and maintain the infrastructure and facilities that are essential to society.
Their work includes complex problem solving on projects which are influenced by a mixture of technical,
economic, social and environmental factors. Civil engineering includes several sub-disciplines which
offer an exciting and broad range of career choices, allowing students to choose a speciality: •
Structural: analysing and designing structures that are safe and can withstand the forces of nature such
as bridges, skyscrapers, space platforms and amusement park rides. • Construction: seeing projects
through from design stage to construction and completion. These projects include the development and
construction of houses, bridges, tunnels, roads, railways, dams, pipelines and major buildings. •
Geotechnical engineering: using soil and rock mechanics, to design foundations for structures, land
reclamation & tunnelling.

Civil Engineering is one of the broadest and oldest of the engineering disciplines, extending
across many technical specialties. Civil Engineers plan, design, and supervise the
construction of facilities essential to modern life like space satellites and launching facilities,
offshore structures, bridges, buildings, tunnels, highways, transit systems, dams, airports,
harbors, water supply system and wastewater treatment plants. A civil engineer is responsible
for planning and designing a project, constructing the project to the required scale, and
maintenance of the project. A civil engineer requires not only a high standard of engineering
knowledge but also supervisory and administrative skills.

What does a Civil Engineer do?

 Civil engineers are involved in the design and building of highways, bridges and
tunnels, schools, hospitals, airports and other buildings, sewage systems and water
treatment facilities.
 Most structures, large and small, require the help of a civil engineer whether in the
designing, planning or managing of the project.
 Civil engineers also help to preserve our environment by assisting in the cleaning up of
existing pollution and planning ways to reduce future pollution of our air, land and
water.

What is the future for a Civil Engineering graduate?

Civil engineers are employed in all the major construction projects carried out by the state or
central government like the public works departments (PWD), the railways and military. Civil
Engineers are mostly required in private construction and real estate companies as project
engineers. Civil Engineers can find the opportunities in any of the following category.....
