Institutional Investor’s European Single Family Office Symposium
27 – 29 June, 2018
For guests who would like to see the local sights of Montreux, Switzerland, we will
be participating in the Chillon castle tour. Please meet in the hotel lobby at 14:00. II
staff will accompany our guests for a visit and guided tour at the castle. Guests will
use their Riviera cards, which are provided by the hotel, for the trolley bus to the
castle.
Chillon castle is built on a rocky island set on the banks of Lake Leman. The first
written record of the castle dates back to 1005, however, it was originally a Roman
outpost. The present castle dates back to the mid-12th Century. Its principal
purpose was to control the strategic toll road through the Alps. There are three
main periods in the castle’s history: the Savoy era (12th century to 1536), the
Bernese era (1536 – 1798) and the Vaudois era (1798 until today).
The agenda for this session will be drawn up by the attending families the week before the event, to
ensure the timeliness of topics. This session will be private, and for families only.
Discussion Leaders: Paul Reynolds, Chief Executive Officer, Thamesis, United Kingdom

While the whole world is clammering about blockchain and the evolution of the
cryptocurrency market, so many questions still remain. Most people aren’t really sure
what blockchain even means, let alone how it can impact our society as we know it.
This discussion will define the concept of blockchain, explain how it is practically
applied in today’s society and why we should even care.
Working together in small groups, delegates will discuss the topic of what could be a
probable catalyst for the next global downturn. We encourage each table to come up
with three specific events or issues that could be considered. Through this discussion,
we can identify top worries and concerns of family offices as well as exploring
implications for each suggested event. Paul Reynolds will collect each table’s list and
share them with the overall group.

11.40 TO 11.55 MAN MEETS MACHINE- WHY THE FUTURE OF INVESTING IS QUANT
Presentation
Salle des Fetes
Wolfgang Batt
Founding Partner
Sanostro AG
Switzerland
Many people think of quantitative investing in the context of “man versus machine”,
the fight of either staying in control or else losing control to a black-box. We think
that this dualistic view misses the point: it is not that the foundations of investing
have changed. Investing is still about efficient interpretation of information and
disciplined decision-making. But what has changed though is the amount and speed
of available information. And here is where quantitative investing comes in handy. It
is a mathematical, rule based formulation of how to collect, connect and interpret
data. It uses information technology to find the relevant data under large piles of
noise. Human decision making is still at the centre of the process but it is moved up
one level. Quant managers manage the models; the models then manage the assets.
