SYNOPSIS:

This course is an introduction to Probability and Statistics for engineering with four major
areas:

Part I: Descriptive Statistics

Part II : Inferential Statistics
Part III : Design of Experiment and Factorial Design
Part IV: Probability and Distributions

OBJECTIVES:
Upon the completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
1. Analyze data from engineering and science.
2. Organize, summarize and present data by using graphical techniques (Part I).
3. Draw conclusions about characteristics of population based on sample data by
using suitable techniques (Part II).
4. Conduct engineering experiment involving two factors, analyze and interpret
effects (Part III)

Effective Date: 15/05/2018

5. Develop the probability based tools that will be used in statistical inference
(Part IV).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Examination:
Final examination is scheduled on the 16 th week of the semester. Five (5)
questions representing the main topics for the course will be given and answer
ALL questions.

Effective Date: 15/05/2018

In order to pass the course, students must get marks at least 40% in
Final Exam.

Tests:
Two (2) tests with three questions each will be given on the 6 th and 12th week.
Students will be required to sit and answer all given questions. Any attempt to
copy or cheat will result in students being barred from completing the course.

Assignments:
One (1) assignment and one (1) case study will be given where the members of
each group need to discuss and give a written solution on the spot during the
tutorial class. Students will be assigned in group.

Quizzes:
Five (5) quizzes will be given during lecture or tutorial based on the
workbook.

Attendance:
Attendance to lectures and tutorials are compulsory. With less than 85%
attendance and absenteeism without valid reason will be barred from taking the
final exam.

E-learning:
All students are required to register and enroll in the course module. Failure to
register will result in student being barred from completing the course. Refer to e-
learning for update on course materials and announcements. All students are
required to down load the work book and have to bring it during lecture. Students
are also encouraged to purchase the textbook.
