Relevance and nature of ICT


ICT is a broad context to understand, it has brought a wider understanding on its use for
socioeconomic and educational development.

Among its use includes access on information, transformation, storage and retrieval of information,
collaboration, use of different applications, development of newer ICT platform and an advocate
for social change. In nature, it can be generally relevant for the improvement of business and
organizational transactions, learnability and communication.

ICT FOR BUSINESS AND ORGANIZATIONS


Business and Government organizations uses ICT to (1) improve the
service delivery to customers, (2) improve organization’s
responsiveness to new developments, (3) change the basis of
competition in the industry, (4) Improve Organization’s overall
performance.
ICT FOR EDUCATION
Realizing the effect of ICT in the workplace and everyday life, today’s
educational institutions try to restructure their educational curricula
and classroom facilities, in order to bridge the existing technology
gap in teaching and learning.

ICT FOR INDIVIDUAL


People use technology to gratify their information needs. Also,
individuals use ICT to increase their social network and connections.
While communication is very important to human, people uses
technology to maintain proper relationship with their loved ones, and
improve the way they make things work in their daily lives.

Archipelagic country- improves connectivity: there was the ultimate belief that ICT usage will make
each country to become part of the global trend, Web 3.0.
Improve productivity and efficiency; the most appropriate technologies were seen as the ones that
enabled the communities and organizations to communicate more efficiently:
ICT functions.
1. Government and governance- there was the belief that ICTs help to monitor crime in society
2. Education- among university academics, ICTs help them reach out to colleagues in other parts
of the world and keep them up to date with developments in their disciplines
3. Economy- here was a high belief in ICT ability to increase the ease and speed of social
communication and at the same time obviate the problem of transportation and can solve
socio-economic problems
4. Employment- instantaneous availability of data for possible career opportunities through ICTs
5. Industries- ICTs were generally seen as the basic tool for survival in the next century
6. Small business- ICTs were seen to enhance efficiency in the workplace

3 Types of WEB
1. Web 1.0—static websites without interactivity. Static –flat page or stationary page.
2. Web 2.0 - coined by Darcy DiNucci January 1999. Dynamic web page it allows the user to interact
with the page. The user can comment or create a user account.
3. Web 3.0 - Semantic Web invented by Tim Berners-Lee. Common framework that allows data to be
shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community boundaries.” A concept of the
World Wide Web that is designed to cater to the Individual user.
Trends in ICT
-as the world of ICT continues to grow, the industry has focused on several innovations.
1. CONVERGENCE - Technological Convergence is the synergy technological advancements to
work on a similar goal or task. Convergence is using several technologies to accomplish a task
conveniently.
2. SOCIAL MEDIA—is a website, application, or online channel that enables web users to create,
co-create, discuss, modify and exchange user-generated content. There are SIX TYPES OF
SOCIAL MEDIA:
A. Social Networks it allows you to connect with other people with the same interest or
background. Once a user creates his or her account, he or she can set up a profile, add people, create
group and share content. Example: Facebook and Google +

B. Bookmarking Sites are sites that allow you to store and manage links to various website and
resources. It allows you to create a tag that allows you and others to easily search or share them.
Example: StumbleUpon and Pinterest

C. Social News . These are sites that allow users to post their own news items or links to other news
sources. They are also capable of voting on these news articles of the website. Those who get the
most amount of votes are shown most prominently. Example: Reddit, Digg, Propeller, Slashdot, fark

D. Media Sharing—these are sites that allow you to upload and share media content like images,
music and video. Most of these sites have additional social features like liking, commenting and
having user profiles. Example: Flicker, Youtube and Instagram

E. Microblogging these are sites that focus on short updates from the user. Those subscribed to
the user will be able to receive these updates. Example: Twitter, Plurk, 12 Seconds ,Dailybooth

F. Blogs and Forums –these websites allow users to post their interest and information.

Mobile Technologies
The popularity of Smartphones and tablets has taken a major rise over the years. This is largely
because of the device’s capability to do tasks that were originally found in personal computer.
1. iOS—used in Apple devices such as iPhone and iPad
2. Android—an open source operating system developed by Google. Being open source means
several mobile phone companies use this OS for free.
3. Blackberry OS— used in Blackberry device
4. Windows Phone OS a closed source and proprietary operating system developed by Microsoft®.
5. Symbian the originally used for smartphone OS; used by NOKIA devices.
6. WebOS—originally used for smartphones; now used for smart TVs
7. Windows Mobile - developed by Microsoft® for smartphones and pocket PCs.
4. Assistive Media—nonprofit service designed to help people who have visual and reading
impairments. A database of audio recordings is used to read to the user.
