What are Cognos BI Diagnostic Tools?
IBM Cognos provides diagnostic tools to help you:

 Verify your environment
 Identify and troubleshoot issues
 Supply the details and systems information to support
Each diagnostic tools contains a JAR file, a batch file, and a PDF that
explains what the diagnostic tool does and the results you can expect.
IBM Cognos diagnostic tools are read-only and do not make changes to
your environment or to your IBM Cognos products.

IBM Cognos From Log Errors to Technotes Utility
Use: This Tool shows the IBM Cognos technotes associated with an error
code from the cogserver.log file.
Run the tool: From a command line (in Windows or Linux), type :
java -jar LogsToDCF.jar

System Overview Diagnostic
Use: Run this diagnostic to retrieve information about your system

environment and system settings.
Advantages:
1. To compare your system values from two different environments such
as development and production
2. To quickly gather system information in matter of seconds
Run this tool:
Run “ execute_IBM_SystemOverview.bat “ for Windows
Type “ java -jar IBM_SystemOverview.jar “ for Unix

This tool provide information on the OS being used, IE version and
its properties, JAVA_HOME variable

Dispatcher Diagnostic
 Use: The Dispatcher Diagnostic tool collects information on the

parameters set for a particular dispatcher that will help resolve issues with
dispatcher settings and check for inconsistencies.
 The Dispatcher needs to be up and running to collect this information
 The tool should be downloaded and unzipped at the below location only
<Cognos install dir>/c10/bin/utilities/
 It can collect the information for other dispatchers in the same or different
environment(same version)

 There are 2 ways of running the tool:

1. Console Mode:

2. GUI Mode:
To get a graphical view of the dispatcher properties , run the tool in the gui
mode.

Content Store Diagnostic
Use: Run this diagnostic to help you troubleshoot IBM Cognos BI Content
Store.
Advantages:
1. Check if a database connection is established
2. Check the database version
3. Retrieve the database connection URL
Run the tool :
Run “ execute_IBMCognosBI_ContentStore.bat” for Windows
Type “java –jar IBMCognosBI_ContentStore.jar “ for Unix.

Below is the file which gives details of the content store being used by the
environment you have provided as input.

Content Manager Size Diagnostic
Use: To query objects from the Content Manager and return information on
count and size specifications
Advantages:
 A quick and easy way to get the size, count and search path of objects in
Content Manager
 Find out why your Content Store is growing and identify objects which
can be deleted
Run the tool:
Run the IBMCognosBI_CMSize.exe (Windows only)

 If an authentication source is configured you will be asked for namespace

and authentication details.
 Go to WindowsPreference and enter the Content Manager url. The
soapaction url is auto populated. In Cognos 10.1.1 use the url from the
Tech Note 1572052 for the soapaction url

Content Manager Browser Diagnostic tool

Use: Reports detailed information for all objects and properties in the
Content Manager database.
Advantages:
 Analyze objects, parent child relationship between objects, inheritance
level, properties and their values
 A tree view of your Content Manager objects and properties
Run the tool:
 Execute IBMCognosBI_CMBrowser.exe (Windows)
 Provide the CM url under Windowspreferences and test it

Choosing any object in the CMBrowser will give the detailed info of the
object.
Eg. Content Administration Info and the Directory info

The search tool helps find an object within the specified scope.
Selecting the object from the result and clicking on Expand Selection will
give you the exact location of the object
