Emergency Action Principle – Primary Survey

1. Check for danger


* If the scene is safe, say “the scene is safe”.
2. Check for consciousness of the victim.
- tap the shoulder of the victim (2x) and
say “hey hey, are you ok?”(2x).
3. Call/shout for help or send someone to call for
help.
4. Open the airway.
- Head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver
- open the mouth, look for obstruction
5. Check the breathing for 3-5 seconds.
- look, listen, and feel (LLF) technique.
6. Check the pulse for 10 seconds.
- locate the carotid pulse (your index and
middle fingers on your neck to the side of your
windpipe).
- feel the pulse

Failure State: The trainees will be marked "NOT COMPETENT" when any of the following
is committed.
1. Not able to check the level of the victim’s consciousness
2. Not able to call/shout for help or send someone to call for help
3. Not able to open the airway
4. Not able to perform look, listen, and feel (LLF)
5. Not able to check for the carotid pulse.
