Conversation Activator Pair Work Cards
 
For the Teacher
 
The Pair Work Cards are designed to use with the “Conversation Activator” exercises
at the end of Lessons 1 and 2 of each unit of the Student’s Book. Each conversation
model is divided into two cards: one with Student A’s part and one with Student B’s
part, with blank spaces in which each student can personalize his or her part. They
are a great way to get students “out of the book” to more actively converse with each
other. Because they cannot read what the other student is going to say, they have to
listen more carefully.

Within the Teacher’s Edition and Lesson Planner, the icon along with the note
“Conversation Activator Pair Work Cards” indicates the suggested point of use for
the pair work cards.

IDEA 1: Guided Conversation Cards
 
Give pairs of students two corresponding pair work cards. Ask students to practice the
conversation, providing their own words in the blank spaces. Then ask them to
exchange cards and reverse roles.
 
 
IDEA 2: Logical Variations
Have a competition in which pairs of students or small groups try to fill in the blank
spaces with as many logical variations as possible. Allow time for students to read their
conversations out loud in class.

IDEA 3: Test Cards
 
Use the pair work cards as a written (or oral) test of social language. Students fill in the
blank spaces, a task that requires them to use vocabulary appropriately and to make
structural changes in the original model.
